Solids and poop

Amelia has had a tough time adjusting to her new poop texture since starting solids. She was up a lot last night trying to squeeze one out. Every time she would cry and cry.she was able to go a little bit three times last night.Any advice on how to help her? Or do I have to just let her get used to it.She's been eating squash and bananas.TIA(on phone, sorry for format)

Re: Solids and poop

  • Bennett always got constipated when we first started solids, but that was mostly with the cereal. Although.....don't banana's kinda "bulk you up" if you know what I mean? Maybe you should try apples or pears...those seem to loosen things up a bit. Bennett would go just a little tiny bit and try soooo hard, it was really sad. We had to give him apple juice once, too, and once that kicked in he was fine ever since.

Now we seem to have the opposite problem....I can't believe he is pooping more now than he has ever in his whole life (thanks similac for getting rid of the sensitive soy formula and only making regular soy Angry  )

  • Bananas always gave me gas but it probably is the culprit here. Yesterday was her third day on it so I may try some apples now to help her out. Thanks sweets. I feel bad, no one likes an uncomfortable bowel movement.I didn't know that about similac sensitive soy. My BM supply and freezer stash is almost dried up and I was looking for that kind. :(

  • We;ve had this prob. too. Try anything that starts with a p!  Pears, prunes, peaches, etc. to help her out. Also if it gets really bad you can give apple and/or prune juice.

  • We had this problem too, especially when I stopped putting prunes in with her oatmeal.  That seems to be the key for us so she still gets oatmeal/prune mix for breakfast every day.  I've also heard anything that starts with a "p".  Is she getting rice cereal?  I've heard that can cause constipation for some babies, too.

  • All the pp suggestions about p foods are good ones.  Are you giving water with solids?  That might help too.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! We are still new to the solids thing. Shopping for P items it is!Tina- she hated the rice cereal so we haven't given her that in a few weeks.I did notice she wasn't going as much when she was eating that though.

  • I don't give her too much water. Maybe a sip after her squash. I mixed the bananas with water.

  • i am constantly trying to balance my LO's GI tract. bananas definitely bind her up, and it seems like applesauce does too. sweet potatoes might, i can't really tell. to balance out, i try to give her high fiber foods-- the P fruits mentioned above, and i think peas help too (although my LO does not seem to like the peas. AT ALL). and i think in general the veggies tend to help more than the fruit. i haven't really tested that theory, just heard it.

and my LO doens't drink much water with her meals either, just a sip or two.

it makes me sad when her poops come out too hard. :( when that happens i go right to Mama's Mixture of prunes, oatmeal and apple juice (in lieu of water with the oatmeal). HTH!

  • Yep, bananas are suggested if you have the runs...they bulk up the poo. Apples will also do that, but apple juice will not. I read that somewhere.

I've been mixing DS's cereal (I also mix a little oatmeal with his rice) with apple juice and he gets 1/2 a tbsp of pears with his vegies. You can also try prunes. Hope she gets better real soon!
