3rd Trimester

stripping membranes

Getting your membranes stripped after being considered full term.

What do you think about this? Have you had it done before? Does it hurt? How soon did you have your baby afterward?

Re: stripping membranes

  • My OB won't do it. Says it only causes unnecessary cramping and if the baby is ready to come, it will come whether the membranes are stripped or not.

  • with my first I was facing induction so I decided to try membrane stripping starting at 40wks.. I had it done 4x and each time brought on a lot of cramps, some contractions.. but all resulted in nothing, and I was induced at 41.5wks anyways.

I've been told that it can have better results the first time it's done for a 2nd baby so I am going to have mine stripped tomorrow. It hurts, it can cause unnecessary discomfort (bad cramps hours and hours later, some minor bleeding), it can in rare cases cause your water to break or lead to infection.

I'm hoping to avoid being induced again however, so I'm happy to take those factors into consideration and feel comfortable with taking this route again.

  • I did not have it done with #1, but I had it done with #2 and I went into labor that night...was minorly uncomfortable, but nothing compared to labor!!

  • My Dr stripped mine at 40 w and 2 days.  That was on a Friday and I had mild contractions Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Went into labor on Sunday evening and had DS on Tuesday evening

  • I had this done today - but have heard it works better for second time moms, we'll see if it works for me or not though. The doctor said it was worth a try since I will have to be induced on Jan. 13 if he doesn't come on his own by then.

Oh - and it was just uncomfortable - like a long cervical exam, not too bad at all.

  • I had it done with my second pregnancy. It felt like a very rough pelvic exam and it brought on a little cramping like my period. I had contractions all the next day and then the next morning, my water broke. My water brok about 48 hours after it was done.

I would do it again. It seems to me, to be a better alternative than walking into the hospital and just starting pitociin and stuff right off the bat. It is like a jump start to labor.

  • I had it done Tuesday morning. It was uncomfortable, but not that bad. I didn't have cramping, contractions, or any bleeding that whole day. I felt fine.

Wednesday morning I began losing big chunks of my mucus plug. By 5 PM it had turned bloody. It's now 3 AM Thursday (I can't sleep) and I'm still losing globs of bloody mucus every time I go to the bathroom, but not as much as earlier. I feel kind of crampy now but no contractions yet.

So, it has caused me to lose my MP and have bloody show, we'll see if it brings on labor.
