Got a new job, now when do I tell them?

Tomorrow I meet with human resources at my new job to discuss start date, salary, benefits etc. I'm wondering if I should just come clean right then and there. I feel like I'm being very deceitful by waiting. Thoughts?

Re: Got a new job, now when do I tell them?

  • Congrats on the new job.

I have an aunt who is offering to get me into a more stable, world-reknowned company, unfortunately I'm not sure I'll have FMLA there being that I'm due in 5 months.
Anyway, she knows I'm pregnant and I asked her what I'd say to HR and she said "nothing" and that they have no right to ask me. And then tell them maybe a month later after hire that I wanted to wait to tell them until after I felt I had a viable fetus.

Heads up you will not FMLA if you get/take this new job.  You have to have worked at your job for the last 12 months to have FMLA protection for your job.  You may want to see if your state has protection though.

I know about FMLA because I got preg after being at my job for 4 weeks...my baby is due 7 weeks before my 1 year anniversary and I will have no job protection (state or FMLA).

  • I'd say don't say yet, just in case.

Some employeers do not want to hire pregnant women because they know we will have to take leave. It's messed up I know, but happens. Oh they usually find some other excuse...

I'd tell them a month or so after you settled. They can't fire you for being pregnant, and your leave time has to be treated like any other employees. (Federal law) If they try to raise a fuss, tell them  you didn't think it was pertinent knowledge as you can do the job just fine pregnant.

  • I would tell them sooner rather than later as you won't qualify for FMLA and they don't have to hold the job for you when you go out on maternity leave.

  • Personally, I would have told at the interview and actually did when I went to an interview a few weeks ago. They need to know that they are hiring someone who will be leaving them for a period of time in about 5-6 months IMO. You don't HAVE to but I feel like it could possibly leave your new employer with a bad taste in their mounth about you, hopefully I am wrong though. I would tell them asap...

This is really why I didn't make a move. Hopefully, a new opportunity opens up once I'm ready to go back to work.
