Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Just got home from the ER and still confused!

DD's been sick the past week with a bad cough, runny nose, and mild temperature. Last night seemed to be the worse of her cough. She coughed non stop for about 45 minutes and was turning red and seemed very uncomfortable. After every time she would cough she would start crying so we took her in to the ER. Well we were there for about 2 hours and the doc came in and said her lungs were fine and her throat was fine but gave her a dose of liquid steriods for her throat and we were sent on our way.

Well this morning when we woke up, DH gave DD a cup of milk and after holding her for a few minutes I noticed her lips were blue/purple. I then checked her hands and feet and sure enough they were blue too. I freaked out and called the hospital while bundling her up in a blanket (assuming she was cold but our house temp was 70-80 degrees) They asked me a series of questions and advised me to take her in to the ER so she can be seen for lack of oxygen.

So we get there and the triage nurse didn't seem too worried. Her color was coming back some but he did a blood capillary test on her w/in the first 5 minutes we walked into the door and said it was 2 seconds (at home it was 4 seconds) and we waited and waited and waited some more. Finally after about 5 hours we got called back and the doctor examined her and ordered chest x-rays and everything came back normal. He said she looked fine. Her ears and throat were red but other than an upper respiratory infection she was fine. He did not know why she turned blue/purple. He said for someone to turn colors she would have to be gasping for air and have 30% oxygen flow.

She seems to be okay now. She regained color shortly after we got to the hospital and has been normal every since. I'm going to set my alarm to check on her every so often through out the night and make sure she's breathing and has color. This is all just so wierd! She's never turned purple before (even when she's cold) She has never been sick before and hasn't had any health problems. Just thought i'd share my story, maybe someone else has been through this or might know of something we are missing! Thanks for listening...Please keep her in your prayers!

  • That is so scary! I'm sorry and I will definitely keep her in my prayers.

But, I think the doctor told you that she'd have to be a 30% 02 to be blue is crazy. Did they check her 02 saturation? (They'd put something on her finger to measure pulse oximetry).

  • IMO, she has an upper respiratory infection (a virus) that has given her a lot of mucus and drainage down the back of her throat.  Milk is notorious for clogging the airway - it sticks to the "junk" that's draining down the back of LO's throat.  I'm surprised the ER didn't advise you during the first visit to limit milk and push the clear fluids.  I'm sure that LO just got a wad of gunk (milk, mucus) and she couldn't hack it out or up or down so it restricted her oxygen for 20-30 seconds.  Hence the purple/blue lips.

Glad everything worked out ok...just keep pushing the clear fluids for the next couple of days and everything will be a-ok! Yes

  • Did she spike a fever at all? DD was really sick last month and her lips turned purple right before we left for the pedi's office. She hadn't had a fever before we left. When we got there she was at 102 and the pedi said that the purple lips were probably due to the temperature spike. She had a bit of a purple color on her hands as well.

It's so scary when the LOs are sick, and when they experience strange symptoms that we've never seen before!

  • did they test for RSV?  we spent the day after Christmas in the ER with P because she was exactly as you are describing except she didn't have blue lips.  but she was the sickest she has ever been.  she had RSV.  but what you are describing is one of the symptoms they told us to watch for and if it happened to go right back to the ER.  it never happened, and she is better now.

so sorry you are going through this.  hope she feels better soon.

  • We're going through the same thing... today got diagnosed with double ear infection, but I think they're wrong. Has LO been tested for RSV? It hits hard this time of year and explains congestion and color change/oxygen problems... DD has it going around daycare. Keep a close eye, and GL!

Yes they did. I believe it was normal..I don't remember the numbers though. Thanks!

The highest her fever got to was 101.9 She's never turned blue before which was so shocking to us. But that day was the first day of her cold/virus that she had a normal temp and wasn't coughing/congested/runny nose. It was that night when she started and kept coughing was when we got worried and brought her to the ER cause she was crying after every cough. I hate her being sick! I wish us mommies have the ability to take them from them!

No, they didn't check. Both doctors really seemed like she was fine. The first doctor was really confident after the shot of steriods that she would be back to normal in a few days. If something strange happens again then I will definitely ask them to run all kinds of tests! Thanks!

Mothers usually have this instinct so definitely get a second opinion! No,my DD wasn't tested for RSV. They didn't even mention that or think to test her of that. Maybe all her symptoms don't match? I need to go educated myself on RSV! Thanks!

  • About 3 weeks ago Allie was happily playing in the bathtub and her lips went blue.  I thought I was imagining it, but she was acting normal....about 3 minutes later her lips were still blue.  DH walked in from outside and I pointed it out to him, and by that time it had faded.  She acted completely normal the entire time, hadn't been sick before and hasn't been sick since.  I watch her carefully, but it hasn't happened again.  Who knows!

Could she have gotten a little chill? That was the first question they asked me when I called the hospital. But I don't think my DD was that cold to turn colors since my house was at least 70degrees+ even when I bundled her up close to me she was still blue until we got to the hospital 40 minutes later. Strange things sure do happen!
