Parenting after a Loss

DS's "colic" was actually...

Coffee!

A few weeks ago it appeared out of nowhere.  Pedi said colic, and that it probably wasn't something I was eating.  But I realized that I has reintro'd coffee into my diet in the days before it started. So I stopped drinking it, and the "colic" got much better after a few days.  I decided to have some coffee today, since I had no proof that it was actually a problem.

Ding, ding, ding!  He's been SCREACHING tonight again.  Sad to be done with coffee when I need it more than ever, but SO happy that I can make DS more comfortable and happy!

  • Oh my gosh!  What a great discovery!  Well, not great that you have to give it up but nice to know!   Hmmm, DD has been particularly bad lately.  I might actually consider giving up coffee tomorrow.  If it means no crying then I'd be willing to do it.  Did you notice an improvement as soon as you cut the coffee out?

  • I think it was at least 3 days or so. (But that beats 2 weeks of no dairy!)
  • OMG!! I am SO happy you discovered this! Sorry about the coffee but its such a relief for you to be able to make your DS better!

I am just so happy for you!

But it also irritates me that everyone (not you specifically!) always passes off fussiness as being "colic". Sometimes there actually reasons behind fussiness and gas! :)

That's what my pedi did! He found nothing else wrong, so he called colic. That's like calling something a UFO, and then realizing it's a weather balloon - just because it's unidentified at the moment, doesn't mean it can't be identified. (Did that make sense??)

Yes makes sense! That is why I continue to dig to try and find a reason for my DD but no luck yet.

  • So glad to hear that you've pinpointed the problem. Can you have caffeinated tea to get you through the day?

  • Wow - that's great that you figured that out, though I'm sorry you can't have the coffee.  Can you try decaf?  That's what I drink even though I know it's not as good and doesn't give you the boost, it's still there and I've tricked my mind to like it.
  • thats awesome! glad u got it figured out!

  • Wow - awesome that you figured that out!  It does suck to go without coffee, though.  Maybe you'll get more rest as a result of his being more comfortable, and then you won't need it as much?  FIngers crossed ...

  • I haven't figured out yet if it's the coffee, or the caffeine - so in a few days I'll try again with decaf, because I just love drinking coffee even without caffeine.  And I'll try some tea or soda for the caffeine after that.  But at least it's a plan...
