Weaning - How AP way? How to get LO to sleep?

As I begin the heart wrenching process of weaning from the breast, i wonder how will I get my LO to sleep now? Any advice to share bumpies? My LO still nurses at before naps and in the middle of the night.

  • ugh! i think i may avoid weaning forever for this very reason! good luck. i'm reading the no cry sleep solution to try to get a bit of a headstart (hopefully).

  • We're still nursing, but DS rarely nurses to sleep now.  He generally goes in his crib awake and falls asleep on his own.  One thing we did that I think really helped was have DH alternate nights putting him to bed so he got used to no breast and a different routine.  The bonus is it's a great break for me!

  • We aren't weaning yet but we recently started making an effort to not nurse to sleep so it won't be a huge ordeal when he's older.  Has your DH tried doing the nighttime routine?  Howe does that go? We've had great luck with DH wearing him to sleep in the Ergo.  I nurse about a half hour before his bedtime then DH will put him in the Ergo and tidy up the house.  The movement calms him down.  Then he takes him into our room (we co-sleep), turns off the lights and paces the room for a couple of minutes.  He's usually out pretty quick.  I still nurse to sleep when DH is traveling or when he's not able to put him down but DS can now easily be put down with either method.

  • We haven't started weaning yet, but I'm planning to soon. DH puts him down for bed and nap sometimes to get him used to sleeping without nursing. We're hoping that makes the process easier.

  • We nursed to sleep for every nap and bed time and night waking since LO was born.  Around 10/11 months she stopped falling asleep while nursing and started going down awake.  Now we don't nurse at all before naps.  She goes into her crib when she shows her first signs of being tired.  At night we still do bath, books, nurse, bed.
