Exclusively breastfeed. I did this with my DD - it worked well for me and that is what I want to do again. She is almost two and has never been on antibiotics - nothing more than a cold. So I think it did help with other factors of course. So I want to do it again if at all possible.

I'm really struggling to decide whether to BF or FF the twins.  On the one hand, I know all the benefits of breastmilk, and I know it is theoretically possible (although very time consuming) to BF twins, but on the other hand, I really want others to be able to help feed them (especially at night) and I'm just personally not very excited about the idea of BF'ing two babies.  I'm reading a lot about both and trying to make an informed decision, but I'll probably try BF initially and see how it goes, and then decide what works best for our family.

We've had a crazy roller coaster week.  My cervix dropped from 2.5 cm (where it had been since 20w) to 1.5 cm last week with funneling, landing me in L&D for 2 nights.  Got steroid shots and several doses of terbutaline to stop contractions, and was sent home Thursday on super strict bedrest.  At this morning's appointment, it was back to 2.4 cm with no funneling!  Hopefully it will keep holding there and we can keep the babies cooking for at least 7 more weeks - my OB's goal is to get me to at least 35 weeks.

I hope to be able to nurse for the third time around because I know that it is beneficial to the baby. I had decided before my first that I was going to BF. During my first pregnancy, I was surrounded by many women at work who had all BF theirs and so I had a decent idea of what to expect. But, I must say that being told comes close to experience.

Firstly, my milk seemed to have come in late and boy was my little one hungry. I felt bad that I wasn't giving her enough as she had dipped quite a bit in her weight. I felt guilty after it was strongly suggested that she be given formula and really angry that she had been given some already by the nurses (although I strictly stated for her to be EBF).  Then, came the engorgement right when I arrived home on the 4th day and boy was that uncomfortable. My boobies had turned to rocks! Following this, from all the sucking came the fiery nipples... I thought I was gonna die! Being up every two or three hours was so tiring, I became zombified. Then there was the pumping which I started just before returning to work which became no fun at all b/c of the prep involved with cleaning and maintaining all the parts and lugging the heavy bag around. Fast forward to the first birthday and I had exclusively BF for over 12 months! Through all that, I luckily never had mastitis ... just a few plugged ducts which aren't fun as well.

It certainly helps if you have support from people who have done it before AND the help of lactation consultants. Having a pump room at work is a plus too! And once you get the hang of it, you develop a routine that works. By the time my second girl arrived, I had it down. I had traded in my Medela Pump-in-style bag for the Freestyle hands-free pump. There was no pain with the nipples since they had 'toughened' from before. I had figured out how to maximize use of my breast pads. And voila! I nursed my youngest daughter for another 12 months.

One thing I have noticed is how my boobies are no longer 'young' looking but sag. But from what I read, this typically happens post-pregnancy whether or not one breastfeeds... so you know what, I can overlook that.

  • Ladies...

FemmeFataleNat is still in the hospital on strict bedrest.  She's still very sick and could use any T&P's you have.
