Two Under 2

those of you with no "Spare" bedroom come in please...

We have a 3 bed 2 bath house. My original idea when I found out about this baby was to move Lizzie into what is now the guest bedroom and make it her big-girl room. Putting just her toddler bed and nightstand in there (no need for a dresser b/c of closets) would leave room for us to put in a blow-up bed when we have company. (the only overnight company we have ever had was my mom, so it's just one person.)

Well, DH didn't like that idea, saying he made Lizzie's room for her and he wants to make a special room for this baby. I can't find the crib to match the dresser we have for Lizzie, and if it's a boy I want darker furniture, so just moving the dresser doesn't seem like it's going to work. there is not enough room to put a blow-up bed in the nursery with all the furniture.

So, with both of our "spare" rooms occupied, where will we put company? How did you ladies solve this problem.

  • I have 3 kids and 4 bedrooms. We don't have a guestroom. Frankly, no one wants to stay over with 3 kids in the house. My single friends would rather book a hotel room (I don't blame them) and my married friends with kids would never all fit into one room anyway (too crowded). IF my parents stay over, we give them an aero mattress in the playroom.........

  • We have a futon in our finished basement for company.

  • We also have a 3 bedroom house with one of the rooms DS's bedroom and the other the guest room.  We don't have any family in town and both of our parents visit on a fairly regular basis.  My thoughts thus far: keep DS in his room, have the new baby in a pack n play in our room for the first three months and keep the guest room as is, then move the new baby to the guest room where we'd have a crib, changing table, dresser, and the queen bed for guests.  When people come and visit we'll have the new baby sleep in our room (pack n play).  I don't know if this will work all that well, but it's important to us to have a place for family to stay and make room for the new baby.  We'll just have to see how it goes!

  • We have a 4 bedroom house with 4 kids and an au pair (live in nanny).  I totally agree with the first post that no one wants to stay in a house with 4 kids 5 and under but on the rare occasion someone wants to stay with us we give them our bedroom and take the pullout couch in the playroom... FYI my parents live about 10 minutes away so most company stays with them.... its much quieter there at 7:00am :)

  • We also have a 3 bedroom house. DS's room was the guest room and we've squeezed a double bed in there for when my parents visit (which is a few times a year). Our other room is our office, DH has a ton of computer junk. I think we'll end up pulling the bed from DS's room and putting either a toddler bed or another crib for the new baby and having the two share a room. When my parents come over we'll put them in the office on an air mattress or get a futon to put in there. Alternatively we've been seriously considering making a move to a bigger home.

  • We have 4 kids and a 3 bedroom house.  So - no spare room.  But, to be honest - no one WANTS to stay at my house.  LOL

We live an hour from most of our family - so they just go home.  And, if we have someone stay over, it is just for a night and it is because they were babysitting, or we went out.  They usually just sleep on the couch.

Works out for us since we never have to entertain guests :)

  • Our plan, for now, is to have them share a room. We have a 3 bedroom house, family out of town, and DH works from home.  We *need* that office/ guestroom!  Even though we'll have a boy and a girl, I just don't see that being an issue for a while.  As for sleeping disturbances, we'll keep DD in our room with us for approx 6 months, just like we did DS - at least by then we'll hopefully have a better grasp on what we're dealing with :)  For DS's first 6 months we only used his room for diaper changes anyway!  If we feel room sharing won't work then, so be it, but that's the plan for now!
  • Eventually we will build out a guest room in our basement (it's currently unfinished) but for now I figure the actual members of our family get rooms over the occasional out of towner :D)
  • We have 3 beds, 2 baths, also but we use one bedroom as the office and that won't change because our living room is not big enough to include our huge computer desk, file cabinet, etc.  The new baby will sleep in our room for the first few months anyway (just like DS did) and then the two will share a bedroom until we move into a bigger house.

ETA:  If we have overnight guests, they sleep on an air mattress in the office, lol.

  • I have 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a small office. We currently have a twin size bed in the office for guests, and the couch. Not many people sleepover nowadays, but that's Ok with me. I'm looking into getting a futon for the office to have  full bed. I also have an aerobed if I need more sleeping space.
