Baby Names

Are these too similar?

So, DH and I have basically agreed on a FN for our baby if it's a boy. We love Vincent. We would most likely call him Vince &/or Vinny as a nickname.

I just saw on another board that someone ruled out a name because it rhymed with their cats name... and then it dawned on me. Our dogs name is Finley. We sometimes refer to him as Finny. Should we avoid Vincent (Vinny) because it rhymes with Finny?

It seems irrational to me, for a lot of reasons... but what do you think?

Re: Are these too similar?

  • That seems a little silly to me.  Now if it was the same name as a pet I'd rule it out, but not just because it rhymes.
  • I don't think it matters at all. You will be calling them both their full names and nick names... who cares if they sometimes rhyme. I have an uncle Vincent and I think its a great name!

  • Think at this time yes. Though you could still keep Vincent in mind for a middle name. Though it is bound to happen. I like Mia (Mee-ah) and we named our younger dog Maya (Mi-ah) and so we vetoed it even as a middle name before LO was born.

Our other two are Roxy and Trooper though.

Good lick with the continued search. Make sure to have fun at it.

  • I love the name Vincent. I wouldn't worry about the cat. You could stop calling it Finny and you wouldn't have a problem.
  • I don't think the cat will mind if you start calling him Fin. Or Mittens.

This, but I think OP said it was a dog...  whichever the case, as long as you keep feeding it, you can call it Dog or Hey You from now on and he will still love you.  So, don't throw out a name you like just because of your pet!

  • I don't think they are too similar at all!
  • That was me who ruled out a name because it rhymed with our dog's name. But that was the whole name, not just a potential nickname, and we're having enough trouble because we call them both "baby girl." My guess is, if you do name your child Vincent, you'll probably end up calling him Vincent or Vince because Vinnie rhymes with Finny. In other words, I don't think it's a big deal.
  • I think the problem that arises with a rhyming name is more to do with training of the animal. Animals don't really respond to names, they respond to sounds. Personally, I would never name my child a name that rhymes with my dog's name because it would be confusing to the dog and it might void all of the training we've done thus far, but that's just me. I figure he's already going to be confused about this new baby coming into the house so I don't want to confuse him even more by giving the baby a similar name. Cats might be different since people don't really "train" them as much as they do their dogs.

  • I see what you are saying, but I think these are okay considering the circumstance. If you are calling them Finny and Vinny, that might get a little rhymey, but Vince and Finley or Vincent and Finny in not an issue at all.

I think about these pets name things too! I'm still wondering if I can use my cat's middle name for a future child.
