Infertility

IVF coverage

Does anyone have an insurance company that covers IVF? And/Or has anyone dropped their work insurance and started paying cash for their own insurance that does covere IVF? Please Help.  Someone told me they added a secondary insurance onto their primary that they pay out of pocket which covers ivf 100%.

Re: IVF coverage

  • I had GHI insurance, which only covered three IVF cycles.  I paid out of pocket for two more cycles after that, and just switched my ins over to Aetna so that I can get three more covered cycles in 2011.  The whole idea of insurance companies limiting infertility coverage is ridiculous--how can you put a limit on a woman's chance to become a mother??

  • I think you will find that where you live dictates a lot, in CA it is very hard almost impossible to find an individual plan with IF coverage based on what some self employed friends have told me.  However in a more IF friendly state you may have more luck, but I don't know that for sure.

Also if you find a policy that covers IF make sure you aren't paying more OOP for the insurance than you would for IF treatments.  Generally individual plans with IF coverage, if they are even available, are pretty expensive.

    Good Luck!

  • Ditto what YellowDaisy said. For me, I was always under DH's insurance. His company switched to Aetna right around when we started going for testing. Not knowing then what I know now, They covered nothing! Not even testing. We spend several thousand. The tests were already done and no one told me they weren't covered. I was super pissed off. We switched to my company's insurance. It's a little more expensive, but so worth it. I have Oxford Freedom. They have covered all my iuis and meds so far. When/if we move onto IVF they have a lifetime cap of $10k, so I'm pretty nervous about that. I have been thinking of switching jobs, but I won't b/c of my IF coverage. Sorry that with IF, as if that wasn't enough we have to worry about insurance too.

  • I think you will have a hard time in Pa finding fertility coverage with any insurance providers. I have Carefirst, but the only reason it covers any fertility stuff is because my companies HQ is in Maryland which has mandated coverage. Every year when we get our new insurance booklet I have a mild panic attack until I find out whether or not we still have coverage. I am convinced one day they will figure out it is cheaper to get each individual office location insurance from their state.

  • If you drop your work/group coverage, you will need to find an individual policy. To get an individual policy, they must approve you and can deny you for a pre-existing condition. I doubt you will find an individual policy with fertility coverage, but even if you do, they will deny you for a pre-existing condition. Sorry to give you the bad news, but it isn't going to happen.
