Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you feed LO grapes...

...do you peel the skins off?  Our DS has his front four and bottom four teeth so far.  Is that enough to chew the grape skins?  And then do you halve or quarter the grapes? TIA

Re: If you feed LO grapes...

  • I don't peel the skins. I only cut them if they are large. Although, he shovels so much food in at once anyway it doesn't really matter.

  • Peel and quarter them, but my LO only has his front bottom two teeth.

  • DS eats them whole. He also has 16 teeth. He has no problems with apple skin, so I'm not too concerned about grape skin.

TBH, I couldn't be bothered to peel a grape.

  • I have never skinned them, but I do cut them in half. For some reason she cannot seem to bite into them.
  • I think the last time I peeled grapes was... geez, like months and months ago.  Def, before DD was even one year.  When she was still using the mesh feeder.  I would peel a few, and stick them in the feeder so this was well before a year because by a year she was doing pretty good with finger foods.

But yeah, I don't do it now.  I just quarter them up.  DD has her 8 front teeth and one barely-there molar on the top.
  • We used to.  My mom actually was the one who started peeling them.  I thought it was an Asian thing.  Embarrassed  My mom baby sits DD while DH and I work full time and I kept trying to give DD grapes just cut with the skin on them and she was having NONE of it.  I'm not sure how or when it happened but now she eats them cut with the skin.

  • We just halve them.  Also, our LO loves frozen grapes when she has new teeth coming.
  • Absolutely not!  I still cut them in half but there's no way I'm peeling each little grape.  I figure the skins make for a little added fiber in her diet Wink

  • I still cut them in quarters, but I've never peeled them. DS is only 12 months and he has two bottom and two top teeth.

  • I cut them in half if they're big, but I don't peel the skins off.  DD's been eating them since July when she only had her four top/bottom front teeth.  She looooves them!

  • I have not given grapes yet, because I thought it was "no-no", just like lettuce where it can stick to the sides of the throat when swallowed and cause choking.  Thinking we passed the stage, I tried giving DS lettuce one time and he immediately choked (he NEVER chokes).  So I just stayed away from grapes.  But after reading the responses to this post, I might try grapes.  My DS loves apples with skin, so I think he would be okay with grape skin if I cut it up in quarters.

  • Wow, thanks for all the great (or shall i say GRAPE) responses!  Very helpful...I'll be getting grapes on my next trip to the store! :)  Happy New Year!
