Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I don't think DS eats enough

DS still wakes up twice or so a night and takes 8-10 oz bottles each time. I'm fairly certain he does this because isn't taking enough food during the day.

Today he had half a bowl of oat meal for breakfast

a bowl of mac and cheese and two dino nuggets for lunch

some more mac and cheese and peas and carrots for dinner.

He also had some apple slices, 4 crackers, about half a roll, and some raw carrots and celery for snacks.

Does this sound like enough? Thanks!

  • Sounds like plenty, and I would say that your DS's age he is waking more out of habit rather than the fact he is hungry.

  • How many ounces of milk is he getting during the day?

My daughter doesn't eat a lot more than what you just mentioned, but she does drink 16-20 ounces of whole milk a day and she STTN. However, she's only 20 lbs and 27.25 inches, so that may make a difference.

I don't really know how much milk he's getting because he won't drink it out of a sippy. His doctor told us to get fluid in him in whatever form he would take because he was getting dehydrated so he drinks a lot of juice and water.

    He's also small. He's 30 inches and only 19 lbs 12 oz

  • Sounds like plenty to me. I'd pee my pants with joy If AJ ate that much :) Have you tried water instead of milk at night? Might make him realize there's no point in waking up.?
  • My daughter is 16 months and probably eats about the same amount plus about 18oz of whole milk during the day.

if it's habit then how do I break it? If I just let him cry he can go for hours. I tried putting water in his bottle instead of milk and he hated that. He went back down but he woke up every half hour until I gave him milk... I'm at a loss. I'm also scared to just not give him any because if he's really hungry I don't want him to sit with an empty belly ya know?

  • Sounds like as much or more than ds eats.  It sounds like a lot of carbs though-could you get some more protein in him?  That possibly might help.

  • Sounds about how much DS eats for his meals.  DS drinks about 24 oz of milk a day and has 2 snacks throughout the day. He drinks milk right when he wakes, at lunch, and right before bedtime.  Do you give your DS milk before he goes to bed?  Maybe that might help?  My DS used to wake up often throughout the night to nurse but it was killing me..he wasn't really hungry but just more comfort nursing.  I ended up having to sleep train DS and he finally STTN at 13 months!

Wait, so he's only getting a bottle in the middle of the night? Ok, that's the issue, he's waking up because that's his time to get a bottle. If I were you, I'd give him his milk in a bottle and not in a sippy during the day. Tegan gets 2-3 bottles during the day because she won't drink her milk from a sippy. Since she's not a great eater and she is in the lower percentile, I feel it's more important that she get her milk, then that she drinks it from a sippy.

She will drink juice/water from a sippy, but not milk.

  • Does he get a bottle before bed?

DS is a huge eater. Always has been. We used to give him a bedtime snack with his bottle. Gradually we dropped the snack and then eventually the bedtime bottle and he STTN without a night feeding.   Prior to the snack, he would get a bedtime bottle but then wake up hungry at 4am.

His snacks were some cereal, a banana, cheese, yogurt....something to add some substance in there.

  • yes, he gets a snack and then a bottle right before bed
  • I would love if my LO ate that much.  My LO eats very little but gets in about 20 oz of milk a day so the Dr isn't worried. He was 20 lbs and 32 in at his last appointment and the Dr said as long as he keeps growing we won't worry.  He has maintained at 20 lbs for a little while now but he is growing every where else.  I speak to our pedi about this a lot so if you have worries definetely talk to your pedi.  It has made me feel a lot better.
  • If you gradually decrease the amount that's in the bottle - by 1/2-1oz each night - then he'll wean gently. Just make sure you're making up for it in the day. Maybe a bottle upon waking and one before bed?

    Good luck!

ps - that sounds like plenty of "adult" food!

  • We were having this problem with DD a few weeks ago. I asked the pedi about the middle of the night bottle and she said it's probably out of habit, so next time he wakes up in the middle of the night for a bottle, put water in it and try to feed them that. She said after a couple of times,, the baby won't wake up anymore for the bottle. I found that not going in every time DD fussed in the middle of the night and letting her get herself back to sleep worked just as well, because she knows I'm not coming in.

  • Double post, sorry.

  • That's about 4x more than DD eats in a day!

and FYI: raw carrots are a huge choking hazard.

  • That sounds like plenty! DD doesn't always eat a lot but never drinks anything overnight ( unless she is coughing and wakes up crying, we will give her water).
