Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I normally hate these sorts of posts but ...

I have a question - need some opinions.

Background: DS has croup.  He hasn't really slept for any extended period of time since the night before last.  This afternoon we took him into the doctor and ended up in emerg.  By the time we got home it was 4:45 and there was no keeping him awake.  He hadn't eaten since noon.

It is now 6:30 here and there isn't a peep from his room.  Normal bedtime is 7.  I am normally a huge "don't wake a sleeping baby" person .... but... I am scared that he is in nighttime sleep now and will wake up in the middle of the night ready for food and to play.

I am still leaning towards leaving him - since it is the first time he has really slept in so long.

Thoughts?  Let him sleep?  Or wake him up in the next little while, feed him dinner, bathe him and put him back ... hoping he will get back into a good sleep?

  • Thats a tough one, for baby and for you! I'd teeter back and forth between both options but truly would probably wake him up and feed. Best of wishes

This is what I would do. I would want him to get something to eat. I hope he feels better soon!!

  • Since he's been sick, I'd leave him sleep. He's worn out and needs to recoup.

  • i am so sorry he is so sick, we spent last Sunday in the ER to find out P has RSV...i would be so torn but i would probably wake to feed.  he is going to need something in his stomach and need to stay hydrated.  he might surprise you and eat and then go right back to sleep if he is finally able to get peaceful rest. • That is a tough one... there are days that DD can sleep 14+ hours at night because she's so tired (and will actually sleep better the earlier we put her to bed). So this could be the case.

You could try going in to check on him and see if making some noise wakes him. Or wait a bit and see if he wakes on his own... he might be so tired that he'll go back to sleep in an hour or two (that happens with DD sometimes when she takes a later nap when she's not feeling well).

Hopefully you will all be able to get some sleep tonight!!

    This.
  • I'd also leave him.  When DS had croup he slept more and ate less, so if you woke him, he might not even be willing to eat.  I'd hope for the best, but accept that he may be up hungry around1 or 2 in the morning.

ETA:  does he nurse?  My LOs still nurse and so I wouldn't hesitate to wake him for a dreamfeed.

  • I would let him sleep. I have been in a similar situation before and it wasn't pretty when I woke DS up. Chances are, he will be fussy and you may have a hard time getting him back to sleep. I'd let the little guy get some rest. :)
  • Let him sleep. I have been through croup so many times and they need their sleep.

  • I'd be afraid to let them sleep for so long with being sick and having no food or water.  I would wake, feed, and see how the night goes, likely will return to sleep very soon. Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the thoughts - especially with DH working tonight, I needed to bounce it off somewhere!

Sounds like croup = more sleep, less food so I think I am going to let the little man be.  Especially as he has had plenty of fluids still today ...  Perhaps an early bedtime for me is in order as well, since the two of us might be up partying in the middle of the night :)

This. He needs lots of sleep when he's sick and if he's getting it right now I'd let him have it. Who knows if he'd be able to go back to sleep if you woke him up if he's feeling so cruddy.

  • That is a hard call. You have pros and cons to both options it seems. I think I would do what a PP said and make noise, maybe turn on his light for a while and see if he wakes. A friend of mine runs a large day care center and she said at the 2 hour mark when nap time is over they never wake the kids, most area already up and for the ones that aren't they turn the lights on and make noise like normal and turn up the music but if they sleep through that then they allow them to sleep, their bodies obviously needed it. If he still takes a bottle or sippy I would maybe keep things dark in the room and see if you can get him to take some liquids. I know both of those are complete opposite but just two things I would consider in the situation. Hope things get better for you and your LO.

  • I'd let him sleep.  He needs the rest.  Croup is notoriously worse at night, so he's not likely to get good sleep through the night until his cough stops.  My little one is just getting over croup too.  It's sad to see them feel badly.  Hope your little man is well soon!
