Christmas Flood 2010 Update:

If you missed my post on Christmas Eve:  I left the upstairs bathroom tub running (drain closed) and ran to answer the phone, the doorbell rang and 30 minutes later, over 100 gallons of water poured through the 2nd floor of my house just hours before my family arrived from out-of-town.  The cleaning ladies has just left and my house was BEAUTIFUL for about 20 minutes.

We spent the next several days surrounded by 38 industrial-size fans and de-humidifiers and having to yell over them.  The insurance company sent us to a nearby hotel and we spent the week there.  We are finally back home but the repairs are scheduled for next week.  The high quality padding under the carpet locked in all of the moisture like a sponge and spread thoughout the majority of the upstairs.  It will be replaced, as well as, lots of wood trim, dry wall and paint.

I will be flying back to Kentucky with ds for the week to get out of the way for the workers.  I hope this new year isn't as exciting.  Happy New Year Everyone!!!

Re: Christmas Flood 2010 Update:

  • Wow.  What a mess! I hope you were able to make the most of it, and could enjoy the holidays a little, at least.

Not near that extreme, but we finished our basement last December.  All the drywall/paint/trim was done, and the carpet was scheduled. The morning the carpet was to be installed, I went down to find about1/2" water standing in the entire basement.  So we cancelled the carpet, put in a new sump, and spent the weekend going thru box after box after box in the unfinished/storage area.

  • Oh, yuck! What a bad ending to 2010.

Actually, no.  Besides the nice swimming pool, our flooring was the BEST part of our house.  The contractor said that he rarely sees padding as nice as ours.  I need to give credit to the previous homeowners, though, as we had just moved in last January.  Ironically, the "tsunami" happened one year, to the day, of our closing.

The insurance adjuster said that these types of issues usually aren't accidents at all but ours obviously was.

I am now on my 2nd drink of the afternoon and predict lots of liquor in my near future.  Thanks for listening.

  • Oh heavens.  That is a crappy way to end the year!

  • That sucks When I was younger my best friend left her bathroom sink running and I guess the sink was clogged.  She went to school and when her family got home that night the whole downstairs was flooded. They stayed in a hotel for awhile. Hope things are fixed up fast.
