Cloth Diapering

If you made your own cloth wipes...

What is your favorite material to use? (Preferably something I can find at Joann's).  I'm going to break out the sewing machine and it seems like an easy first project.

I don't want anything too thin. Half of our wipes are Thirsties Fab and I love how squishy and soft they are, but we also have a lot of Imse Vimse organic flannel and I don't like them as much.

Re: If you made your own cloth wipes...

  • I bought some flannel at Joann's and am going to use terry cloth on the other side. I have yet to make them to see how I like them but the flannels seems pretty soft.

  • Mine are all handmade by me and all made from flannel.  The greenest and cheapest way to go is to use your old receiving blankets or buy some used at yard sales or thrift shops.  You're paying like $.50 for 5 wipes that way!  Also your old flannel has already been washed and is nice and soft.   My first batch is faux-serged (i.e. zigzagged) around the outside and the batch I just made is turned and top stitched.  I like the T&t best because they don't fray.  I find the others in flannel at least have to be trimmed after the first few washes.
  • I used flannel or thrift shop receiving blankets for both sides.  I cut to size, serge around the edge, and just trim a little if it's really off.  For something that's wiping a butt (or spit up) I want it to be fast and effective.  No time for turning or topstitching for me... and I find terry to be messy to cut and minky cloth to be kind of slippery (although sometimes worth it b/c of softness).

This. And I also zigzagged my first batch and T&T my second. Definately T&T, otherwise they fray and it's annoying.

  • I did flannel/terry cloth and serged the edges.  The terry cloth is so thin/crappy that it's starting to tear away from the bottom stitching of the serge.  Annoying.
