Prenatal yoga or pilates

When is a good time to start this? I tried the google machine and recommendations seem mixed. I'm not sure how quickly classes fill up so I thought I'd be proactive. I live in Alexandria (near Shirlington) so if anyone has any recs, I'd really appreciate it. TIA!

Re: Prenatal yoga or pilates

  • I did regular reformer pilates for 2 years before 1st pregnancy and continued thorough both pregnancies.
  • I read that you should start early in your second trimester.  I started around 14 weeks and am still going.  I love it!

  • I live by Shirlington too and I would go to the Pure Prana studio in Old Town. They have prenatal on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm and Saturday morning (I don't remember what time). I love it there. Totally relaxing and the teachers are great. The only problem was sometimes the traffic was kinda bad so I wouldn't make it down there in time for the 6pm class. Also I was down in Del Rey last week and I saw Mind the Mat was doing prenatal yoga. I've never been there but here's the link for both studios: https://www.pureprana.com https://www.mindthemat.com
  • I started at 23 weeks at Virginia Hospital Center but there are women there are are much earlier and later on in pregnancy

  • Thanks ladies. I've done both yoga and pilates before but  inconsistently and so I was weary about rejoining a regular class. I'll check out the studios that were mentioned...much appreciated.

  • I took classes with Jennifer Moore (www.moorethanyoga.com).  She lives in Shirlington but teaches at the intersection of Rte. 50 and George Mason.  You can start classes at the start of your first trimester.  She also teaches post partum yoga and infant massage.
