car seat base

I'm thinking of getting the graco travel system, because it seems reasonably priced and has good safety ratings. I'm wondering if we need a second base for the other car or when we go on vacation. I heard some car seats you can strap in without the base. That's the graco snugride car seat and it can be installed with no base (the seatbelt goes through holes in it then you pull the seatbelt to the end to lock it in place. There's a discussion about it here.
