Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I should have called the pedi, right?

I think Ethan has croup and he hasn't ever had it before so I didn't know whether to call the Ped or not.  He is acting normal, is playing, but is a little bit more "whiny" than normal.  So I called the doctor just in case and told them he was basically fine but since he never had it before I didn't know what the protocol was and they are having him come in.  Is that normal?  Was it stupid for me to call?  He does have a history of bronchiolitis.

  • If it's croup, he should definitely be seen.  Does he have a cough that sounds like a bark that gets much worse at night?  That was our sign that E had croup about a month ago.  The good news was that one steroid shot and he felt SO much better.

  • My DS has croup as well. We took him straight to the ER early morning because he's had it before and the pedi recommended we take him in if it happens again. They gave him a steroid shot and sent him home with meds and he's doing much better. He too was playing normally and whinning more. It's perfectly normal for the pedi to see him. Don't worry too much. Your LO will be just fine Smile.
  • I think that it's always better to be safe than sorry. It'll make you feel better to take your son and have them check him out. It can only help.

  • My pedi wants to see LO everytime she has had croup which i think is 6 times now. They need to make sure that there is no fluid in lungs and that the breathing sounds clear. It may sound awful to us but most times on the inside they sound ok. If his breathing is wheezy on the inside then they may suggest a nebulizer.

  • I call for everything. I think you handled it just fine.
