Cloth Diapering

Brand new to the idea of CD

After lurking on here and watching a few YouTube videos suggested by friends, I am newly open to the idea of CDing. The one horror story I've heard is how much more leaky CD are opposed to sposies. Is there a comprehensive website/blog that you could recommend that has all of the brands, types of CD? I do find it a little overwhelming since there is so much information out there.

What types of CDs, in your opinion, are the best? AIO? Prefolds? Pockets? Fitted? Brands? Least amount of leakage? Anything will help!

Thanks ladies!

  • As long as you remain consistent in changing the diaper before it gets saturated, CDs are absolutely not leakier than paper diapers. I have had a few pee diapers leak, due to not changing him quick enough. I have had ZERO poop leaks in the 5 months we have used cloth. I had a blowout with paper almost every time he pooped. You do have to change more often with CDs but that is not really an issue since they don't cost 15-25cents per change.

I love pockets. AIOs take forever to dry. I  hate prefolds because it is very difficult to complete a fold with my child trying to crawl away.

I love Kawaii pockets and BumGenius seconds diapers. We have a large stash of these for under $400. We also use hemp inserts for overnight diapering (not a single leak using these in the 12 hours he sleeps).

  • I have some detailed reviews on the CDs we've used in my blog on the Adventures in CD page.

  • The only time J. has been in sposies was over Thanksgiving as we traveled and didn't have a washer. Every single poopy sposie leaked! That hasn't happened in CDs. (The only leaks we've had are from diapers that didn't fit well or user error, like a PF not completely inside of a cover.)

I like PFs. They are easy to learn to fold and economical. That's what we use at home during the day.

At night we use pockets, mostly BG 3.0 stuffed with hemp. We use either the pockets or PFs for going out. We have 1 fitted; I'd like to try more.

Here and here are good websites for CD basics.

  • CD's definitely do not leak more then disposables - like PP said, you just need to change and/or stuff appropriately.  We mainly use pockets, FuzziBunz and BumGenius.  I use the BG's if we are going to be in the car for a while and double stuff the pockets - no leaks.  And also like PP said, I've NEVER had a poo blow out in cloth but had many in the month that I used disposables.

I think pocket diapers are the best way to start.  they are easy to use, easy to dry and there are many brands.  My faves are the FB's and BG's.

  • We didn't start cloth-diapering until 15 months but have not found CDs to leak at all.  We use a few different brands of pockets:  bumgenius, fuzzibunz, and smartipants.  I recommend the Jillian's Drawers trial (they have one for newborns too)--this really helped me understand the different types of cloth diapers and get a feel for using them.  It was quickly clear to me which kinds we liked.

I was hesitant to CD and we switched late in the game, but it's actually very easy and I can't imagine going back!
