Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Any 15 month olds only saying one word?

DS is 15 months old today and still only saying "uh-oh" and not even mama and dada.  Just wondering if he's the only one...

  • yep, i wouldn't worry about it. just recently ds has started talking a ton. he only said "uh oh" for what seemed like forever. if he's understanding things you're saying or directions you give him, i wouldn't worry about it at all. ds still wasn't saying much of anything at his 18 month appointment and then all hell broke loose within just the past few weeks.

  • Yes his receptive language is good.  I'm just wondering if the pedi wants to send us for speech therapy, if we should wait and see what happens at the 18 month checkup?

mine said although he was only saying like 2 words at his 18 month, she wasn't worried because he understood me when i asked him to get his shoes, etc. she told me if it was the same at his 2 year we'd definitely take the next step. i'd wait and see what the pedi says. i'd assume the same as mine but i guess they all have their opinions

your LO still has a ways to go before his appointment, and things can change overnight with them so you never know when he will start talking more! don't stress about it mama

  • No , mine is 16 months old and at 15 months was only saying bye, she still only says bye-sometimes she will throw in a Hi-but it is very random.

But she is starting Speech Therapy through EI next week.

  • O is almost 17 months with no (recognizeable) words. He appears to have good receptive language when he wants to. As a mother, I'm a little worried. As a future speech pathologist, I just have an ear on him. He is motorically inclined, so to speak, and the pedi shook a finger at me and said, "you know better than to be worried!!" He's getting sooooo close, though. A lot if variegated babbling (mixing consonants and vowels) and he is developing normally otherwise. If he still isn't talking by 2 years i'll have him evaluated. Until then I'll just encourage speech/language! :)
  • D (16 mo) says Dada and occassionally will say Ho Ho when asked "What does Santa say?" He also makes a zzzz sound when he wants you to read to him, we think this comes from us asking him to say please.

He also has 3 animal sounds...moo, grunt (pig) and arf (dog)

Our pedi was concerned so we taught him 2 baby signs (more and help) and he caught onto those right away. Now shes not quite as concerned. BUT, if he doesn't have 10 words by 20 months, he will go to ST.

  • DOes he say any consonant sounds?  Does he say dadadada or mamamama  without meaning mom or dad, or anything other repetitive babbling? If he does he is fine.  If he doesn't saying anything but uh-oh I may have him evaluated.  He is still a little young for speech therapy....try and look up some strategies for encouraging your child's speech online....one important one is modifying your language to his for the time being......

Yes he does.  I keep trying to each him to say mama and dada in context but no luck.  Same with "up", "dog" , "cat" etc.  I'll check online, thanks!

Wow, that sounds like a lot of pressure!  Is 10 words at 20 months standard, or did she just arbitrarily pick that number?
