BCP causing PPD?

Has anyone heard of or have experience with the BCP causing depression? I have been on it for 2 cycles and my first one I chalked up to adjustment but this cycle I have been a sad, weepy, and just feel off. The only change is the pill and I was feeling really good after DS was born. Much more so then after DD was born.

Could my funky mood be the pills? If I have to give them up in favor or non-hormonal BC that is fine with me since I wanted to try them before committing to an IUD (Paraguard).

TIA and lets hope the funky mood passes in the mean time.....

Re: BCP causing PPD?

  • Yes, I have had severe episodes of depression triggered by BCP.  It is a side effect for some women.  I went from near-suicidal to being fine within1-2 weeks of stopping the pills.

WOW! I'm glad to hear that you are doing so much better! Perhaps I will fininsh out the pack (last pill is saturday) and see how I feel after AF. Maybe I will skip a month and see how it goes. I will be happily surprised if this is the cause since I took BCP for years before starting my family. Lets hope its that easy of a fix!

    Thanks for your reply!

  • Yes. The pill made me miserable and made my pms worse. I will never take it again. I can imagine that you may be more susceptible to depression symptoms being triggered in the post-partum period too.
  • I am on the same pill I was on for years before TTC at all- and it is horrid. I am about to get the paragard (I was going to yesterday, but decided to put it against my 2011 ins. deductible instead- rather than waste the deductible for a week of 2010...)

anyway- this time around, the pill (I suspect) is making me crazy, and my pms has never been worse. I am a hateful weepy freak for about 3 days prior to my period. I am also switching from my beloved prozac to celexa, because I fear it is also not working for me...

I hope to be feeling much more normal in 2011, and I hope the same for you.

I can't wait to get off the pill (I have to wait for my next period, because they want to put it in when I am on it (yuck, lol)

My new doctor has one and she says it is a dream come true.
