If your baby is on Prevacid...?

How long did it take for the Prevacid to "kick in?"

DS has been a miserable mess for four weeks now.  We did two weeks of Zantac which didn't seem to do a thing (went from .5 ml dose to 1 ml dose and still, not helpful).  He started Prevacid Christmas Eve so we're on day five - but his fits after eating are as bad as ever.

Before Prevacid, when he was still on the Zantac, we even tried him on Similac sensitive stomach formula for 5 days, and tried Alimentum for 6 days.  He's back on my milk since switching to formula didn't seem to help.  So far pedi thinks he has "silent reflux" - the non-spitting up kind.

I see a lot of posts at reflux on here - makes me feel better - I feel so frustrated by this whole thing.  We have an appt. with a GI specialist next Thursday.  My other two kids didn't have any problems like this - we're frazzled to say the least.

Does Prevacid take a few days to work, or, if it was going to work, would it have worked by now?

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

  • Don't give up yet. It took a full 10 days for DD to become a more "normal" baby, and then she started going downhill a couple weeks later and pedi upped her dose. They grow so fast that you may have to adjust it several times. Hang in there--it has been a lifesaver for us!

  • DD has silent reflux too.  She got a bit better after two days on Prevacid, but it took a full week for us to see a good result.  I didn't check his age--he wouldn't be hitting his 6 week growth spurt, would he?  DD was bad again during hers, but went back to normal afterward.

  • My son lost weight on prevacid. The only thing helping is zantac and not all the time. We are meeting with a GI in a couple weeks.

DS has acid relux and milk protein allergy, and had torticollis, used to EP, now we FF . April siggy 3-6 month

  • Did they give you the solutabs or the compound liquid?  My DD didn't respond well to the solutabs but did better after about a week on the compound.
