sippy cup help needed

I am trying to transition my lo from the bottle during the day to a sippy cup.  He only takes a couple of sips from the cup and then he is done with it.  I have tried the take and toss cups(which he likes), the regular soft spout sippys and a soft straw sippy.  I don't want to give in during the day and give him a bottle, but I don't feel that he is drinking enough fluids this way.

He takes a bottle first thing in  the morning 6oz or so and a bedtime bottle 8-12oz.  He was also getting a bottle after lunch 6oz.

Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: sippy cup help needed

  • Maybe try a sippy that's the same brand as his bottles.

  • DD did not take milk in her sippy to begin with.  In her mind, bottles were for milk.  We would put water in the sippy and she did better with it.  Sometimes I would put a tiny splash of juice in it so it tasted sweet and was more appealing to her.  Once we got her drink water well out of the sippy, we started trying milk.  At first she would only drink a few sips, but little by little she started taking more until she worked up to a full cup.
  • I tried to drop one at a time but that didn't work for us, so I dropped all but our bedtime bottle one day. The first day or so they might be a little fussy and not drink quite as much as usual, but once they get the jist it should go back up. Ours loved the sippies though. As long as he is having a wet diaper every six hours, he should be ok. If the fluid intake doesn't pick up by day three then you may want to talk to your pedi.

    Good Luck!

  • For us, it was easiest to take away all options but the one we wanted her to have. So we took away all the bottles and only gave her sippy cups. We also only gave her milk in the sippy. This was easiest for us and her because it didn't confuse her and didn't offer more options than we were willing to give her during the transition.

  • Keep trying! It took our DD a while to get used to drinking milk from a sippy (we have two Tommy Tippees). I didn't try lots of brands, I just kept giving her the same one until she accepted it.

     ditto!!

although we did the switch at the same time as getting rid of the formula so she equated formula with bottles and regular milk with the sippy.
