Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

DS still doesn't say any words...

DS will be 14 months next week and still doesn't have any words besides mama and dada.  He babbles a lot (is almost constantly "talking" just not actually saying words) and points to things and makes sounds (he'll point to a light and say tiss???)  Pedi wasn't concerned at his 12 month appointment but all the milestone charts say he should be saying 2-3 words besides mama and dada at this point.  I'm considering taking him in to see what the Dr. thinks...

  • I always say better safe than sorry.  I would go just to be safe!

  • He's only 14 months old. DS didn't start really talking until at least 18 mos and now he says everything and speaks in sentences. I wouldn't be worried.
  • DD doesn't say much either. Everything is "da" but lately she has been saying the ending of words like for duck she will say the "k" sound. I feel like DD receptive language is so much more advanced than her expressive language.
  • Paloma is 14 months and only has a few words: doggie! nana (for food) and eye. There are a couple of others that come and go... but she doesn't really say "mama" and "papa" for us, no matter how much we try! She understands a lot of words, so I'm not too worried. It would be nice if she called me mama though! For the OP, I would see the doctor if you think there is a problem with understanding words (not just saying words).

  • ds was just at the pedi and i mentioned my concern that he wasn't really talking... he doesn't even say mama or dada!! he was before he started walking but since then, nothing but baby babble. anyway, our pedi wasn't concerned at all and said ds would talk when he was ready.

  • DD was the same way.  These last few weeks she has suddenly added in several new words.  I was getting concerned about it too a few months ago, but I read that in the babbling, she is probably using words that we just don't understand.  If she consistently calls milk "faa" it counts as a word, even if it isn't the correct word.  I think DD was "talking" in the midst of all her babbling, and I just couldn't translate.  But I know it's hard when you see kids on here that are the same age as your LO and they are saying 15 or 20 words and yours is only saying a few.  For a while I just had to skip all the "How many words is your LO saying" posts so as to not freak myself out.
  • This is 100% normal - it's normal to have no words until closer to 18 months even.  As long as kiddo is babbling and responding to your words, it's likely not an issue.
  • My boys weren't saying much at that point either, but had a HUGE language explosion around 15-16 months.  They seriously seemed to learn a new word every day or so.  At their 18 month appointment, the pedi said to expect 4-10 words.  If I were you, I wouldn't worry just yet.  All babies talk at their own pace.  Just keep talking to him.  If he doesn't have 4-10 words by 18 months, maybe worry a little.  But not just yet.

I love his name BTW.  I have an Eli too!

  • I was concerned about DS not talking and asked the pedi at the 12 mo. appt - and she said she would like him to say mama and dada specifically by the 15 mo. appt.  Then that pedi moved and I had to see another pedi at the same practice at the 15 mo. appt.  At 15 mo. DS said - moo (cow), baa (sheep), bye bye, mama (but not dada), and more.  The new pedi said that he was developing fine and that he could understand what I was saying to him (hand me the ball, etc), but that I should encourage him to talk more by labeling everything (although I think I was doing that...).  Anyway, now DS is 16 mo. and he says a lot of words!  If I had to do it over again I wouldn't have worried so much!
  • Thanks ladies!  I try not too worry but as you all know it's hard!!

DS does understand words, so I'm not at all worried about his receptive language.  He shakes his head no, when we say no and shows other signs of knowing what we're talking about.  I guess I'll just bring it up at the next appointment rather than taking him in specifically for this.

  • My son will be 16 months this week and doesn't say any words, not even mama or dada. He also doesn't point to things or use many gestures. And he usually doesn't respond to his name. I know his hearing is ok because he hums songs and does respond to certain things I say like "where are your shoes?" he will go get his shoes. I brought it up to my doctor and he said to wait until 18 months. My doctor is very laid back though...

  • DS doesn't say anything besides "Uh Oh" which he started at 15 mos. DH & I are pretty laid back people and we aren't worried about it.

DS is a pretty smart boy (if I do say so myself!). He can point to most body parts and points to his different toy animals when named, etc.

My mom says that my sister didn't talk until she was over 2 and went from saying nothing to talking in sentences. I predict the same for DS.

  • Don't worry about it. My DD is just shy of 16 months and she is just now really starting to say 5 words including mama and dada. Kids go at their own pace I wouldn't stress at all unless you felt it was a hearing issue etc.
