Cervical check every 2 weeks necessary?

I had my first ob appt a couple days ago and everythign went fine.  Next up is the nt scan at a little over 12 weeks and then my next ob appt at 14 weeks.  My ob told me that unless there is a problme they would probably only see me everr 4 weeks but that doesnt seem like enought with twins.

I have no reason to think anythign will be wrong, but I'm full of anxiety.  Should I demand cervical checks every two weeks after 14 weeks?  Did you have them?

  • It's every 3-4 weeks for awhile unless theres a problem.  Then it's every 2, the every 1.  Towards the end I was so tired of going to the dr.

  • Ditto PP, at 20 weeks I went to visits every 2 weeks and ultrasounds every 4.

  • They had me go every 2 weeks from 16 weeks to 28 weeks with not only my twins but my younget singleton.  I believe that the impromptu cervical check saved my youngest son's life (totally not exaggerating).  At 23 weeks exactly I was at 2.5 and at my regular appoitment at 23w4d, they did an impromptu one and I was at 1.0, funneling and my his water bag was buldging.  I was immediately sent to the hospital, put in trundle position and 2 days later had a cerclage.

I was monitored closer though since I had a cone biopsy several years before I got pregnant with my twins.

  • I didn't start going every 2 weeks until 2 weeks - also when they started doing cervical checks. They also started U/S every 4 weeks at that point. At this point I go weekly to my OB, every 4 weeks for growth U/S, and twice a week for NSTs - so basically I live at the hospital :)
  • Sorry for my typo - I started going every 2 weeks at 20 weeks.
  • I have my next appointment on Friday, and from there on (20 weeks) I will be every 2 weeks. Before that, I was every 4 weeks. Around 27 weeks, I will go weekly.
  • I think it depends a little on what type of twins you're having and if there are any extra risk factors/complications. I have di/di twins and I'm going every 4 weeks till 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks. I forget when it switches to every week; either 32 or 34 weeks.

And at *every* visit since they found out I'm having twins, they do both an internal u/s (to measure cervical length) and an external to make sure the babies are growing at the proper rates, amniotic fluid levels are good, etc.

  • Every four weeks is fine. I did have problems early on and I was still seen every three or four weeks. You are fine.
You don't want them to check your cervix-- they don't do it because all that poking around can often do more damage than good (introduce bacteria, stimulate contractions...). The only time they checked me was once I got to 34w bc I was having serious BH ctx. They checked me in the hospital bc it was PTL, but it was fine. Then, they looked three more times until I had my section.

  • I had my cervix checked every week only because I had lost my first set of twins at 22 weeks so I was being very closly watched. I had a cercelage put in at 14 weeks, so I was checked every other week with vag ultrasound to make sure I was not funneling, then internal every other week to make sure the stitch was doing it's job.

I think normally they check every 4 weeks, then after 34?? weeks it goes to every 2 weeks. Not to sure.

I don't think you want to be checked all the time because there is always a risk of infection.
