mei tai vs ergo

I saw an Ellaroo mei tai at my local consignment shop and am thinking of getting it except that it's black and pink (problem if I have a boy?). Anyways, I have an Ergo and DH really likes it and I do too for the most part but I was thinking the Mei Tai may give me more options in positioning DS. Is it worth getting (for $40) or is it not going to be that much different than the Ergo we already have?

Re: mei tai vs ergo

  • I have 2 WAHM made mei tais- I bought them before I got my Ergo and before I had DS.  I think that w/ a newborn a mei tai is better because you don't have to deal w/ the whole newborn insert thing.  Also if you are traveling they can be better because they fold up smaller into a bag, etc.-   On the flip side I think the Ergo is easier to fasten and adjust and can feel more secure.  I don't know the Ellaroo MTs, but my Ergo straps stay put better than my MT does for long periods of time- my MTs have relatively wide but unpadded straps.

As far as flexibility of carriers- 90% of the time I do front carries in both.  I think it's much easier to do a back carry in an Ergo than it is in a mei tai- especially if you don't have a spotter.

  • perhaps i, the owner of more carriers than my baby is months old, am biased, but i say get both. i find each of my carriers serves a different purpose. as for colors, match the carrier to you and your outfit -- not your baby. YOU are the one wearing it.

Think about it, if you have a girl, would your husband want to wear a pink carrier? Probably not. the carrier matches the wearer, not the baby. I knew my husband would never wear a ring sling, so i didn't feel bad buying it in purple. whereas my sleepy wrap is a gender neutral navy.

  • I would get both. A mei tai would be better for high back carries, which is the Ergo's weak point. :)

  • Thanks, I am going to call and see if they can hold it for me for tomorrow. We already have the Ergo which we love as well as a New Native but thought I'd try it out.
