Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Is your LO required to wear shoes at daycare?

Last year when DS1 transitioned to the one-year old room, the director told me the state required he wear shoes.  I didn't agree and wanted him to go shoeless, but because they said it was the law I didn't fight it.  Now it occurs to me to look into it myself before DS2 goes to the one-year old room in May... except I cannot seem to find a law requiring toddlers to wear shoes at daycare.  Both boys go to Kindercare.

Anyone have this experience as well?

  • Yes, it's a safety requirement in case of a fire for children past the infant room to wear shoes in daycares in our state.  I'm sure it's the case in your state also per your DCP's rule, so honestly I don't see why you'd fight it.

  • No.  In fact, DS's shoes are always off when I go to pick him up because he takes them off so they just leave it that way.  I would definitely look into it.

If it's the law, I'll go with it.  If DS2 is walking by then, I won't care either; but with DS1, he was not walking at one year.  Current recommendations are to keep children shoeless as often as possible until walking is mastered.

  • I use to be in management at Kindercare. Honestly not sure about the law requirement, that may vary by state, but it's a safety policy.

  • Yes, it was the rule at ours as well but they counted Robeez and other soft soled shoes as 'shoes' so we just used those until they were walking.

I know what the recommendations are, but the law doesn't differentiate between children-it's a blanket law.  Honestly if it's a huge concern for you then mabye you should look at hiring a nanny or using an in-home DCP (not sure in your state if they have to adhere to the same safety standards?).

Oh, I know that.  Honestly, it's not a dealbreaker or anything like that... I just was curious as to whether this was maybe more of a "policy" than a "law" and if so, I was going to explore it further.  He'll just go shoeless everywhere else!

  • Both kids wear indoor shoes/slippers/crocs when at daycare.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • we had to buy slippers to keep there because they keep the floors very clean and you aren't allowed to wear outside shoes
