Eye Color?

When did your LO's eyes change to their permanent color? My LO had grey eyes when he was born, but now they are a deep blue color. I'm hoping they stay blue like DH's, but my WHOLE family, except my mom has brown. Is brown dominant most of the time?

Re: Eye Color?

  • Typically what the eye color is at 9 months is what it will stay. But you would notice a slow change before then.

  • Brown is dominant. I have brown. H has green. DS#1 is brown. DS#2 are greenish brown but I bet they will be completely brown before too long. I was hoping for green this time. Smile

  • While brown is dominant, your mom not having brown eyes means you may be a carrier of the blue eye gene (I assume your mom has blue).  Therefore it is possible your LO will have blue, but they will be changing for awhile yet.  The brown is more likely, but if you passed a blue-eyed gene rather than a brown one to your LO, then blue will happen (your DH could ONLY pass blue eyed genes if his eyes are blue, as 2 recessive blues are needed to see blue).  I have brown, as does my mom, but my dad has blue, and DH has bluish-green.  My LO's eyes go between gray, blue, and green a lot.  I'm hoping they end up green like DH, but we will see (blue and green are similar genetically)!

  • Brown is dominate to blue but if your mom had blue eyes and your DH has blue then you have a 50% chance of your babies having blue, because you carry your mom's recessive gene.

  • DD had dark brown eyes by 5 weeks. I have brown eyes and DH has hazel.

  • Brown is a dominant trait like you said, so assumed that my DD would get my H's pretty brown eyes. As of right now I don't think she will, she'll be 3 months on Thursday and her eyes are still bright blue. I think hers will either end up green like mine or blue like both of her grandmas.

  • We did one of those calculators and our kids should all have blue eyes! We both do and DS1 does- I'm sure this one will too! FWIW, my mom has blue eyes and my dad has brown. I have blue and my brother has brown. So just b/c one parent has brown doesn't mean your kids will!!

  • I'm hoping DD's eyes stay blue too, right now her eyes look just like mine. She is pretty much a clone and looks exactly like DH, but he has hazel eyes, I'm hoping SOMETHING of me stays with her!..lol
