Camcorder and Digital Camera?

My baby isn't due until May but i've got a question for the new moms.

My husband and I bought a new digital camera for ourselves for Christmas anticipating we would be taking a lot of pictures over the next year.  It cost about $300 and can take pretty nice videos.

However, we also received a HD video camcorder from my parents as a Christmas present.  Its obviously specifically for videos so its a lot easier to hold for the purpose but i'm wondering if we really need it if we already have a nice digital camera.

What do you all think?  Do we really need both or should we try to return the camcorder?

Thanks!

  • I would return the camcorder and the $300 camera you bought.  I would then put all of the money towards a nice dSLR.

I agree! I just got the Nikon D3100 and LOVE it! It takes great videos too.

agreed. We didn't get an dSLR, we got the Olympus E-PL1 and LOVE it. It takes amazing photos as well as HD video and its half the size of a dSLR.

This. And Canon just came out with a DSLR which also shoots video.  I just wish I waited because now that's the one I want!
