Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Update on dr. appt-negative HPT at six weeks

Hi everyone.  So I had my doctor's appointment this morning.  I had taken three HPTs over the weekend which were negative so I was definitely prepared for the worst.  Turns out that what most likely happened was a chemical pregnancy.  Where your body is technically pregnant but the fertilized egg never implants and your body absorbs it.  I had some bleeding/spotting that was most likely a light period.  Apparently most people don't even realize that a chemical pregnancy has occurred but b/cause I tested so early (13 dpo) I found out.  I am upset to say the least but also optimistic for the future.  Hopefully I will be back on the first trimester board again soon!  Dr. says we can start TTC right away and the good news is it happened so quickly for us the first time so maybe we will be just as lucky when we try again :)

Re: Update on dr. appt-negative HPT at six weeks

  • I'm sorry for your loss, but I wanted to correct that a chemical pregnancy does implant.  Hcg is only produced after implantation, so if it didn't implant, you'd never get a bfp.  I found this misconception in a few places while researching chemical pregnancies (I also just experienced one).

Once again, I'm sorry for your loss.  DH and I are also TTC again right away.  I hope you get another BFP soon.

  • Thanks robbie3982, I remember you from the first trimester board.  I am also sorry for your loss.  I have been trying to do lots of research about chemical pregnancy because it seems so confusing for me.  That's what the dr. called it but basically it seems to me like if I hadn't taken the test and just waited, I would have had the bleeding a week later and never thought that I was pg.  I am just sad because it is hard to get your hopes up.  It is basically my worst fear about the pregnancy come true.  GL to you on TTC...I'm sure it will happen quickly for you too!

  • It does suck knowing that if you weren't charting or hadn't tested, you would've just thought that your period was late.  My bff asked me if I'd rather have just not known, and after thinking about it I said no.  Even though I'm really sad about the loss, I'm glad I know it happened because if it keeps happening I'll have more information to bring to my doctor and I'll be one step ahead of where I'd be if I didn't know.  I remember reading in TCOYF that the approach taken (tests and treatments) for someone who's unable to get pregnant should be totally different from what's done for someone who keeps getting pregnant, but has early losses.

  • I am sorry that you have gone through this, but glad you have such a great attitude. Know there will be up and down days -- but there is always hope!

I wish you the best! M.

  • CP's are really common. Most people don't even know when they had one. Before early hpt's, people did not know. I am sorry for your loss.
