Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

tell me about going from 2 naps to 1

When did your LO go down to one nap?  How did you know he/she was actually ready for one nap?

DD has been seriously fighting 2 naps for over a week now.  However, she's clearly tired and now she's sick too.  I don't really feel like 1 nap is enough right now, but I don't know....

  • DS goes to daycare and when he was around 13 months he was in the early toddler room where they only do 1 nap.  It's worked out great for us and he seems satisfied.

  • Aven switched herself to one nap right at 11 months.  She takes one 1 1/2 to 2 hour nap around 1:00 or noon if she wakes up a little early.  She just stopped showing sleepy signs in the morning, so I didn't put her down till she did.
  • I think it is harder on the parents sometimes than the kids. They will adapt, but it can make for a long first week or two. We started by pushing back her morning nap. She was going down around 9:30 then about a half hour each day then she was going down at 12:30-2:00 usually. I miss having a ton of free time to get things done during the day during the double nap, but I love having more time to leave the house, make plans, etc.I was never one that said you can only have one nap there have been days where she has been extra tired and we added in a late afternoon nap as needed. Good luck :)

  • DS dropped to 1 nap about a month ago.  He had been fighting his 2nd nap since he was a year old and was starting to fight taking his 1st nap so early.  I let him stay awake until around 11-12 when I noticed he would happily lay in his crib and fall asleep...absolutely 0 fussing.  His 1 nap lasts about 2 hours usually.

  • I started dropping their 2nd nap at 17 months. They started showing signs of too much sleep, they would take an AM nap and then a PM nap and then they weren't ready for bed at 7:30. So I started keeping them busy in the AM and now give them a nap from 12-2.
