Tylenol before vaccine

Does anyone give their LO Tylenol before vaccines to prevent discomfort or a slight temp?  DD has her 12month appt tomorrow and curios to see if people do this..I haven't before but I know someone that gives it to their LO before his shots.

Re: Tylenol before vaccine

  • I've done it once, but asked the nurse/pedi first. They said it was fine, but I had to make sure to wait til after they took DS's temp. So that's what I did.

  • I've read that giving Tylenol before shots can reduce the efficacy of the vaccine.  A slight fever can be part of the immune response you want, so giving something to reduce that can slightly reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine.

  • Our pediatrician advises against it saying that there is evidence it may make the vaccine less effective.  We give tylenol as needed after shots and sometimes we don't need it at all.

This. Our pedi no longer recommends giving it before vaccines, and only after if the fever is high or you can tell baby is really in pain.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • Thanks...I was also advised of this too!
  • It can also somewhat mask any reactions your child can experience from each vax, and it may be difficult to see exactly what type of reaction LO is experiencing. This is what happened to us and the ER scolded us for giving tylenol prematurely as we weren't 100% sure if we understood the severity of DD's vax reaction while it was happening or if we were able to gather the right information from the symptoms we could see. (All is fine now and we still vax- minus the offender- but an interesting thought)
  • Our pedi advises not to give before as it can mask the reaction.  While DD has gotten a fever after most of her shots, so many of our friends' kids have had no reaction that I would hate to medicate if it wasn't needed.
