Say you buy your nephew a Christmas gift around $20-25 each year. (this is just an example to keep it simple).
You find the perfect gift that MRP is $25 but is on sale for $13.00. What do you do?
a. I just saved myself $12.00 out of my budget but since it's really worth $25 that's all he's getting.
b. I just saved $12.00 and now I'll buy him another gift to go along with the money I just saved so he gets the full $25 spent on him.
Re: What kind of gift giver are you?
I usually tend to be a B. I never thought of it as raising the bar and setting a higher gift value precedent, this may change my habits. hmmm.
But the reason I ask is SIL is now a self proclaimed A. Upon opening LO's gifts from her she proceeded to tell us how much she really spent. It kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I have no problem with the A scenario but keep your savings to yourself and not boast about to to the recipient.

A. It's not about the money you spend, it's about the quality of the gift and the thought behind it. I don't see the point in going out and spending more just because I can.
ETA: I am a total bargain hunter. I will go out and get a bunch of sweaters in the boxing week sales and save them to give as gifts the next year. I don't care that I only spent $10 on each person--it's still a $30 sweater, and now I can rest easy knowing there's a little more money in my bank account should anything come up.
