Mommies of Climbers...help!

DS is now climbig, on chairs, our couch,    tables, etc.

DH found DS this morning having climbed onto the TV console to turn the TV on.  Im constantly telling him to sit on his tushe, but I think it goes in one ear and out the other.

How do you keep your sanity, and your LO safe?

What worries me is when DS climbs onto the couch and tries to pull the pillows off, whereby throwing his body back.  We have a tile floor.

Re: Mommies of Climbers...help!

  • DS just started climbing on furniture last Tuesday. Now it is non-stop. He can get to a light switch from our couch and thinks it is so much fun. I am super-nervous too. That room was our safe room. Not anymore!
Yeah, I have no advice. I don't think there's anything we can do to stop them (but if I am wrong I would love to hear it).

  • DD1 started climbing before she could walk. We just stick her in a 1 minute time out in her crib anytime she climbs something she's not supposed to. It's worked VERY well. There are a few things she'll still try to climb, but for the most part she understands that climbing = time out. Oddly enough, the only thing she has NOT yet figured to climb is her crib.

The time out is what our pedi suggested when she turned 1, but it really didn't start clicking for her until the past few months.

We also keep this toy she doesn't like (a stuffed moose that rolls and laughs) on our computer chair and she hasn't touched it since - that was one of the things she'd climb despite time out after time out.

  • Oh and I should add that if your LO is using anything to help aide in climbing, take it away. We had to move a ride on toy, a push walker and a couple other things she was using as "stepping stools" into our room. I pull them out for her to play with on occasion - but I don't keep them out for her all the time because they eventually turned into stairs :-D
