DD will be 15 months old tomorrow. She has slept through the night like a champ since she was around 1 month old, with only a few random episodes of wakefulness. (The worst when she was 9 months old and we were not only on vacation- so she was sleeping in the PNP- but she was also getting her first teeth at the same time).
The past couple of weeks she has been waking up once or twice during the night and is quiet if we rock her but as soon as we go to put her in the crib she cries. I suspect she may be getting her first molars but how do I know for sure? She has 8 teeth- 4 on top, 4 on bottom so far. Sometimes giving her a bottle of milk (the nighttime bottle is the only time she gets a bottle- the rest of the time she drinks from sippies) helps but I don't want to get in this habit. And really, I was planning on weaning her from nighttime bottle to sippy after New Years anyway. Sometimes I give her a half dose of Tylenol because I suspect it's the teething and Orajel doesn't seem to help, and that helps. But I don't like giving her Tylenol or bottles in the middle of the night, especially if it's NOT the teeth!
How do I know if this is truly teething related or just her being wakeful? I don't want her to get in the habit of waking up during the night since otherwise she's been an awesome sleeper. But I also don't want her to be in pain. She also is uncooperative every time I try to look or feel in her mouth.
Re: 14-15 month old wakefulness (molars?)
DS is doing exactly the same thing. but he has been at it for almost 2 months now (at his 12mo checkup pedi said molars were coming in) and we JUST broke the gums this week on 2 of the 3 that were working thier way up at 12 mo!!!! I hate giving them tylenol so much. I judge it by if he is really acting like he is in pain or just fussy.
My only real advice is if your going to give tylenol IMO you should not give a 1/2 dose. DH does this all the time and it drives me nuts. If you only give a 1/2 dose it wont be helping any and wont be doing you LO any good in which case your unnecessarily giving them meds. IMO you would do better not to give and meds than give a 1/2 dose. I also heard motrin works better than tylenol bc it reduces swelling and lasts longer.
I found orajel works for a short period. you could try this if you really against giving meds. A lot of time i will give orajel 1st see if DS relaxes if so then i know he was uncomfy with his teeth and if he wakes again i will give him motrin. I save giving either LO meds for night time and just deal during the day with a cranky baby bc i know molars can take a long time and i dont want to give them too much meds for too long.
