We just started, very low key though. I decided it was time, because DS started to acknowledge his poo and pee, but patting his diaper with his hand when he poo's or grabbing at the front when he pee's. I figure that since he cognitively knows, we can try introducing him to the potty. We'll see how it goes.
We bought a potty about 6 months ago but we aren't pushing anything until she seems like she's truly interested. She'll talk about it, tell us when she goes pee or poop and will sometimes sit on her potty before bath time and pee BUT she still isn't fully interested. I'm a pretty firm believer in letting them lead the way with potty training.
There are two camps.. There are some that say that babies as young as 3-4 months can be potty trained but some people have issues with that. We aren't going to potty train until she's about 2 years. For each its own.

ditto this philosophy. i plan on pretty much waiting till DS is asking to use the potty. my husband is a urologist and the facts are that the average child successfully potty trains between 27-36 mos. we have not bought a potty yet and he has never even sat on the toilet. he will sometimes pull at his diaper if it is poopy but not often. we will wait till he is openly expressing a TON of interest in the potty to even introduce it.
eta: boys tend to lean towards the latter half of that statistic.
I'm going to attempt to "try" after the first of the year. She talks a lot and can let us know when she needs this, for example "more milk" she says. So teaching her to communicate her need to use the potty should be failrly simple if I can get her to understand the concept.
The ONLY reason I'm even trying now is b/c we are expecing #2 in April and I'd like to have at least those 3ish months to try to PT her. I'd prefer to only have one LO in diapers. However, if it doesn't work I will hold off until after she is 2- no biggie.
