Babies: 0 - 3 Months

anyone dealing w/mis-shapen baby head

this title sounds funny. But basically, noticed baby's head was looking a little mis-shapen. I know their heads are very soft at this point and can get "flat" in spots if they are in the bouncer too long, etc. I noticed it on LO and then the pediatrician noticed it as well and sent us to a specialist that does that baby helmet thingies - DOC band. Anyone else dealing with this and what are you doing about baby's head (if anything) ? I've talked with various ppl who all have different thoughts, some say it's totally unnecessary, but at the same time I don't want DD to have a funky shaped head either... anyone have experience with this?

  • DD's head isn't too round either, part of it is b/c she spent 3 hours in the birth canal b4 they ended up doing a C Section - DR said that was the most significant conehead he's seen in a while, but now it had weird ridges and what not, PED said it was fine, not too worry. So I'm trying not to. :)

  • Everyone tells me that my DS has a weird head and I should massage it...

I asked my pedi and he said it's normal, babies have weird heads, up to 1 year. He said that it takes a while for some babies' heads to round out and when I talked to my dad about my silly in-laws suggestions (to massage it, or make him sleep with his head straight) he laughed and said, "You're born with the head you got, have you seen a lot of people with misshapen heads? Don't worry about it, you can't do much anyway!" So that made me feel better.

DS does have a little bit of a misshapen head (I'm seeing it now that his baby hair is falling out) but...hair will grow back and I'm not sure any of us have perfectly round heads either, so I'm not worried, and you shouldn't be either!!

  • My daughter had a misshapen head (and a very assymeyrical eye) and was diagnosed with craniosynostosis at 8 weeks. She had surgery last October and is doing awesome! Run it by your pedi and ask for an x-Ray or ct scan
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • At this point you don't need to stress.  Just be cautious of how much time you are spending in the bouncer or swing and be sure to turn LOs head off the flat spot when they are sleeping.  It will correct itself damatically once LO starts sitting up.

My DD had a flat spot that pedi noticed around 2 months, but you couldn't tell now.
