Q about baby sleeping next to bed, BF, and safety.

We plan on having DS in the bassinet part of a PNP next to our bed until he outgrows it, then we'll re-evaluate. I also plan to BF.

I'm going to be breastfeeding him in bed at night. Should we be following bed sharing standards since he will be in and out of our bed at night?

If so, am I missing any vital information about safe bedsharing?

No pillows (I've heard that some people have small pillow?), only sheets, parents can't be on meds that affect sleeping, no bed frame, I think I read something about clothing being safe also.

  • I'll see if I can find a link, but you can have a pillow. It's no excess of pillows, blankets, etc. No loose clothing. I just pull the covers up to my waist. We still have the bedframe, but the mattress is pushed up tightly against it (you just want to eliminate danger of baby getting jammed in there).

  • My blog partner (Ecobaby) did a great post on safe bed sharing and co-sleeping with links to info: https://www.becomingmamas.com/safe-bedsharing-and-co-sleeping/

I'd at least know how to safely bed share - you never know if you'll find that works better for you at some point ;-)

  • I use a king size tempurpedic pillow cause its quite heavy and not fluffy. Its hard to move around. I used to use a co sleeper and when DD grew out of it she moved into bed with me and I love sleeping with her. I find I have a hard time sleeping now if she isn't in bed with me. I put her in a sleep sack and then sleep with the duvet at my waist.

  • DS slept in the bassinet next to our bed for a little over 6 months. I bf him at night in our bed and then put him back in his to go to sleep. I was able to nurse quickly (5 to 15 minutes so falling asleep with him still in our bed was never a problem. We didn't worry about covers and pillows (actually this and the fact that I couldn't really sleep with him in the bed were reasons we never co-slept). I wouldn't worry about it unless LO is actually sleeping with you. Knowing how to co-sleep safely can't hurt but I wouldn't practice it unless LO is actually sleeping with you.

  • If you're going to nurse the baby in bed, you will probably end up falling asleep with them at some point.  So I'd make sure the bed is safe.  You can sleep with a pillow and blanket, just make sure they are not near the baby's face.
