Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I need your opinions!!!!

I sit for a little girl on Monday's and twice in the last month her mom has decided to take off and therefore I will not be sitting for her. I really would like to address the issue with her because I cannot afford to not be paid 2 weeks per month. I mean I know most who use a daycare provider still have to pay even if their kid is sick or they go away... How should I bring this up with her.

Re: I need your opinions!!!!

  • be upfront and tell her you depend on the income and if she can't be consistent with dropping off her dd to be watched then tell her she can either still pay you if she would like to keep you as a sitter if she decides to stay home on a particular Monday or you are going to have to find some other sitting situation that will provide consistent income for you.
  • you should have a contract written up and have that policy stated in there.  A contract will protect from many things, including not getting paid like this.

  • Just let her know.  Our sitter does not expect to be paid when we are not there.  I think lots of people assume that with in home providers.  I would pay her though if she asked for it.  She is worth it.  Although 2 weeks is alot - I am guessing she might not like it if we did that!!!!!
  • ditto jrosie.  I think that is the big difference between in home and a center.
  • You should defintiely have something in writing.  But if you didn't discuss it prior to watching her daughter, it will be tough to start a new policy.  Of course, like mentioned in the PP, if she wants to keep you as a sitter, she will need to make a choice.  Can you compromise on 1/2 payment for the days she doesn't drop off her child?  Just keep it in mind for your next client to adress the subject prior to watching their child.

  • I think that a lot of in home providers are doing this now.  If you didn't discuss that when you started, it would be pretty tough to do it now.  In future, I would definitely have a contract of sorts drawn up.  If it continues to be an issue, you could probably say something like one of the first posters said about needing to find a new sitter if she doesn't still pay you.
