Anyone's LO Have Eczema?

Miles was diagnosed with this on Monday, and the pedi prescribed Eucerin and an antibiotic, since it had become infected.  I didn't think until tonight that I should have asked about general care items (I know, Bad Mommy, but I was relieved to find out it wasn't a viral infection or something worse).  Is there a type/brand of shampoo/baby wash that works best?  I've been told that J&J is very drying, which would only make matters worse, right?  Also, is there any way to help the poor kid with the itching?  It's like he can't stop scratching, which is just making it worse.  We've been slathering him in Eucerin 4 times a day, per the pedi, but we're looking at increasing that tomorrow, if necessary.

Re: Anyone's LO Have Eczema?

  • We currently use Aveeno baby wash on DD, but I think I'm going to switch to Cetaphil since her patches are getting worse again. We also have a prescription lotion that we use on her & we slather her up with CerVae cream a few times a day. Definitely stay away from J&J soaps, including that new "natural" line they have, that stuff dried her skin out so bad. Also, only bathe LO a few times a week. When DD's skin gets really dry, I use the Aveeno oatmeal bath & that seems to help too. GL & HTH!

  • (posting from phone, sorry for the formatting) DD has terrible eczema and is under the care of a pedi dermatologist. Her derm recommended CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for shampoo/bodywash, bathing every night and then immediately slathering her in CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (in a tub, not a pump bottle). We have to lotion her up when her skin is still damp and anytime during the day that we notice she's dry or getting chapped/red. It has helped tremendously! Both can be found OTC at Target and most pharmacies where we live. We were also given rx for a hydrocortisone cream for bad face flare ups and Locoid cream for bad body flare ups.
  • Also -- we were told to bathe her every night because we needed to wash irritants off her skin that she comes in contact with during the day. Slathering cream on her while still damp helps from drying out. We were also advised to not use pajamas more than one night without washing (which we didn't do anyway) because even light sweating one night can irritate her the next.

    This is very interesting!

  • DS has eczema (not terrible, but gets patches during dry winter months).  I use Cetaphil RestoraDerm body wash at bathtime - it's for acne prone skin.  After the bath I use Aveeno Eczema moisturizer.  I swear by the moisturizer it makes a huge difference for my LO.

  • We use Burts Bees Baby Wash, Aveeno lotion, and baby Aquafor for the patches.  If it's a patch that she's scratched really badly (usually at the base of her neck) we put A&D diaper ointment on it.  It works wonders for healing the scratched skin.  When it heals we just go back to the Aquafor until it starts to bother her again.  Good luck!
  • DD's eczema is pretty mild, mostly just the trunk and occasional spots of her arms and legs. I lotion her twice a day with Cetaphil and that worked great through the summer. With the dry winter weather, she's been having some break out spots that clear up with OTC hydrocortizone cream within a couple days. Just use it sparingly. We use Aveeno body wash, do baths every other night and wash her clothes separately in free and clear detergent.

  • Thank you all for the input.  This is exactly what I was looking for!

     You all rock. :)

  • DS has horrible eczema (I just posted about it in my blog...) and we are using Cerave lotion and the Cetaphil Restoderm for bath time.  I've also switched to All Free and Clear for all of our laundry and bought him Organic cotton onesies to wear under all of his clothes.  We are lotioning him up 4 times a day (two with steroid cream) and are in the middle of allergy testing, too.

One thing I learned is to be careful of things like lanolin, which is in some lotions including Aquaphor.  Apparently some peoples' skin is intolerant to lanolin.

    Good luck!

  • Oh and for the itching, we give him 1/2 TSP of Children's Zytrec each night.  Id ask your pedi about that.

  • We use Aveeno baby wash/shampoo and Eucerin lotion. But the thing that has worked the best is blueberry yogurt! Ok, not on his skin, but we make sure he eats a serving once a day. I read the probiotics in the yogurt and the antioxidants in the blueberry helps treat the eczema. I haven't used the hydrocortison in quite some time because of the yogurt - and the last time we used it is when he didn't have yogurt that day.

We usually buy a bulk vanilla yogurt (full fat) container and blend in frozen organic blueberries and 2 bananas. My DH and DS eats this each week with their lunches. Hope it helps!

Thanks for the tip, but the pedi suspects that his eczema (in conjunction with other symptoms) pay point to a milk allergy, so we are dairy-free until further notice.  I do appreciate the input, though.  I never would have thought of yogurt. :)

  • We also use the Aveeno wash/shampoo. As far as lotion goes we use the California Baby Calendula Cream. If it gets really bad we have a 3% hidrocortizone cream.

Make sure you are using a "free" detergent. With no dyes and fragrance. That helped Jayden A LOT

I should have added our pedi also suspected a milk protein intolerance. We were milk free as well up until 9 months when I mentioned to the pedi that I didn't notice any connection when I "cheated" and with DS's flare up happened (I BF DS so was milk free as well and sometimes I just had to have a piece of pizza). That's when we tried yogurt and haven't looked back. But I completely understand where you're coming from.
