What do you think?

So twice during the day my daughter made a gasping sound.  At first I thought it might be reflux or burping, etc.  The second time I told myself I would watch and see if she did it again.  Well she just did it in her sleep....I decided to call the on call dr.  do you think I am over worrying and should have just waited till tomorrow???  UGH why do these things always happen at night???

Re: What do you think?

  • I cant help but think you're WAY overreacting to a little noise she made. Other than the 3 times she made a sound that could have been gasping, was she acting normal? Could she just have been yawning?

  • I'm having a hard time imagining any gasping sound that would warrant a call to the doctor.
    bishes be crazy
  • could she be coming down with a cold?  when DD had a cold she sometimes did this if she had post nasal and it is as though she didn't know what to do with it in the back of her throat.

No it was a true gasping sound.  She did act normal, but it is a definite out of the ordinary sound.

  • She probably figured out when she does that it makes a funny noise.

  • My DD does this when she is scared, has a cold, or hicup's. I wouldn't worry about it unless she acts short of breath, turning blue, not acting like herself for extended periods, etc. This time of year with colds, flu, I wouldn't go to the doc for something so minor.

I was going to say this, too. That said, go with your instincts. I would be surprised if it turns out something is wrong, but if you're worried, you're worried. Get reassurance. NBD
  • Its probably just a sound she learned how to make and thinks it fun to do. My DD does it all the time. I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok...so even if it was gasping, do you really think it warranted an after hours call to the dr? If she was acting fine otherwise, I just dont understand your urgency. To be honest, I dont think I'd call the dr at all for what you're describing. Kids make noise. Sometimes the noises are weird. Unless her lips were tinted blue or she was acting out of the ordinary, I dont see why you'd call anyone. What are they going to do tonight, anyway? Bring her to the ER in the middle of the night for a sound she made 3 times?

I dont mean to be harsh, but seriously, this borders on hysterical.

  • what did the on call dr say?

i can't imagine calling the on call dr over a sound my child made - what could the dr possibly do about that?  they would likely just say to go to the ER if you are concerned.

  • I don't think you are overreacting. It might be nothing (I hope so), but you are right to go with your gut. Hopefully your pedi will give you some things to check out to make sure she's okay.

  • Dr. was happy I called, and said any strange breathing things warrant a call to them.  They told me what it could be and what to look for, and what to do if it happens again.  They said the sound I described is definitely out of the ordinary.  Thanks for your thoughts...I never call the dr. though and it really scared me.  My dad is a dr. and he thought it was definitely strange too and to call.  I know many of you didn't agree with me, but at least I can go to sleep not worrying that she isn't breathing normally.

AMEN!  You're the mom and don't let anyone else convince you that you're overreacting.  You have a right to do what you think is right.  Glad you went with your gut.  Even if it was nothing, you still have a right to make the call and have that peace of mind.

    Yes

This.  DD does a gasping sound because it amuses her.  It scared me a bit at first, though, too.

  • I would have called too! Don't let any nastys on the bump make you feel bad - they clearly are bored and looking to pick a fight!

Oh, dear lord. She ASKED if people thought she was overreacting and people answered. No one was looking to start a fight. Seems like you are though.

  • I didn't mean to start anything :)  I appreciated all of the comments.  I did ask for opinions on whether I should have called or not.

  • I'm just saying a mother was concerned asking for advice not for people to jump down her throat telling her she is being hysterical.

Glad her LO is ok, and of course it's good to trust your mommy gut. But sometimes you have to recognize when your reaction is over the top. Obviously she did, because she came her asking if we thought she overreacted. And, given the circumstances, her reaction was the very definition of hysterical. No one is trying to start a fight. She did what she felt was best, even if others didnt think it was necessary. She asked, others answered.
