Attachment Parenting

WM: a Positive Discipline ?

I love what you posted about Ari PDing you the other night.  We do something similar at home but it is basically what we come up with.  I just looked at the PD books on B&N and there were several books appropriate for at DS' age.  Do you have a recommendation?

I'm a fan of Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn too, but Positive Discipline is more nuts & bolts, here's how to apply it in real life.

  • Thank you.  These are two I saw on B&N.

I am curious about Alfie Kohn on parenting.  I do not like any of his stuff I have read, worked with, or had in-service on for classrooms.  There are a few good ideas but overall, I think he is completely out of touch with the reality of being a teacher so I tend to avoid him thinking he may be out of touch with what it is to be a parent.  When I get a chance, I may read some of his parenting stuff since there are so many less external factors to deal with when parenting than with teaching.

  • I totally forgot about the fact you're a teacher. There's a lot of good info for using PD techniques in the classroom in the first PD book I linked. She has one specifically for teachers too.

  • I just finished Unconditional Parenting.  I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.  Some of it rang true for me.  I am convinced that Kohn is correct that punishment doesn't work.  I think I disagree with him about praise though.  Although I see his point about how praise can be manipulative and try to examine my motives for praising my daughter.

Do you read the PhD in Parenting blog?  She has some very good reviews of different parenting books.

I feel like to much praise or to vague of praise (good job!, etc) can backfire, but I wasn't sure where he was going with it. Like, should I not praise at all? I think he could've been more concrete about how to execute that.

That's definitely one subject I think Positive Discipline is more in line with my thinking & gives more examples of how to do it. It's almost like UC is more theory, PD is theory + how to do go about doing it.

I'm glad you posted this.  I've had Unconditional Parenting on my list of books to read and I just keep avoiding it.  I think this is exactly why.  I remember watching one of his lectures a few weeks before I went into a classroom for my practicum and couldn't reconcile his theory and reality at all.  I do acknowledge  that it's a really hard theory to envision when the only school environment I've ever been exposed to (as a student or teacher) was the exact opposite of Kohn so I could just be resistant because it is sooo foreign to everything I've ever known, seen or been taught.  I'd love to see a classroom truly based on it though.

Also, thanks WM for the links.  Maybe I'll try those before I give Kohn a whirl again.
