Zantac v. Prevacid or Prilosec

Ok - LO has been on Zantac for 4 of her 7 weeks and I don't think it's working anymore. I've heard the Prevacid comes in solutab and it's hard to get the whole dose in them b/c of this. Is prilosec the same way. What are your experiences with these kinds of medication. LO is still gaining and doesn't spit up - but all the other signs of "silent" reflux are there.

TIA

Re: Zantac v. Prevacid or Prilosec

  • I haven't tried Prilosec so I can't comment on that. Zantac worked for my boys for maybe a week or 2 at the most. We then switched to Prevacid. Prevacid works a lot better but not 100% of the time. But my boys' reflux is severe. Very severe. We used the oral suspension at first. That's really easy to give to them. They say it doesn't work after a week or two so if you try this make sure you get a 14-day Rx and not a 30-day. After a few weeks on that I switched to the solutab to see if that worked better. It didn't for me. It worked the same. So I switched back to the oral suspension b/c it's so much easier to deal with. The solutab isn't *that* hard to give them, once you get the hang of it*. DS1 kept spitting it out, which is why I wanted to switch back. My DS2 swallowed both w/o a problem so if I only had him I'd probably have stuck with the solutabs.

*If you get the solutabs, get a 5ML or 10ML syringe. Put the pill in the syringe, then draw up water and swirl the syringe around until all the granules get in the syringe's tip.

  • We haven't had any difficulty yet with the Prevacid solutabs. I just put the tab between her cheek and gums, and she just kind of sucks on it. I think she likes the taste. : )

There have been a couple of times where the tab starts to make it's way back out of her mouth, so I just nudge it back in and give her a pacifier to encourage her to keep sucking.

  • My DD is on prilosec. We never tried Zantac, but I have been happy with the Prilosec.  Ours is compounded to a liquid and we give it to her w/ a syringe.  Thats kind of a nightmare though because its cold and thick and she HATES it so she tries to spit it out.  Takes awhile to get it down.

  • zantac did not work for us.

we are on prilosec which works off and on.  2.4ml, but I expect it to go up today.  it is in a syringe, and we lay her inbetween our legs and let her head fall back a bit.  i shove my finger in her mouth to hold down her tongue.  i shove the syringe down her mouth and put it down her throat.  it is traumitizing, but otherwise she spits it out.  the dr also said blow up her nose, and it makes them swallow.

    good luck.

  • Ditto PP--we have Prilosec compounded into a liquid at the pharmacy. She doesn't love it, but it has given us an almost-normal baby so it is well worth it to everybody.
