Just had 6 mo. appt. (Bio: 2 months preemie & no complications except blood transfusion & 3 week NICU stay for DD and 7 week NICU stay for DS)
DD is doing great. All milestones ok & ahead of adjusted age.
DS doesn't sit-up too much & likes to straighten backwards when in Bumbo. Loves looking straight back, 'upside down', & over his head. Favorite position. Pedi says it's a tone issue & to get an evaluation done. Probably some physical therapy or exercises to do.
Should I be concerned at all about this? I will do whatever we need to do but just curious about other issues/implications to look out for.
Re: Pedi, "Tone issue. Have eval done." Trouble ahead?
Even with weekly OT, Andrew wasn't sitting up until 7-8 months (adjusted) or so. His OT made him sit in his Bumbo for 1 minute (timed) and he'd wail the entire time. He *hated* it. It was so hard for him.
He doesn't have any 'tone issues' but was just generally a little bit delayed in gross motor skills. (He army crawled at 9 months adjusted, walked at 17 months adjusted. )
I don't necessarily think it's something to really worry about (yet), but, it never hurts to have an eval done. The eval may give you some insight, and you can decide whether or not to pursue therapy at that time. You can always change your mind and the eval process does take a little bit of time so being proactive isn't a bad thing.
My babies have been called "low tone" since they started being evaluated. the neo wrote it in "areas of concern" on her sheet, but when i asked her about it she said it wasn't a big deal. most gymnasts are low-tone - just means they are going to be really flexible.
i wouldn't worry too much at this point. GL!
