XP: Allergic to Bananas

DD has a confirmed milk protein allergy and I am extra careful to make sure that I read all labels etc.  It took us forever to determine that she had the allergy b/c she does not always present normally when she has an allergy until she has had the food in question for months which makes it hard to pin down what the problem is.

She has had excema like patches in her diaper area and little bumps around her anus for 3 months.  I have tried everything to get rid of it, including many prescription creams and 5+ doctor visits.

The other day I noticed a slight pinkness (very slight) to her face when she was eating her DAILY morning Banana.

I thought I would cut it out of her diet and see what happens.  It has been 3 days and her excema on her bottom is almost completely gone.  Now I'm scared that she has a Banana allergy.  She is highly allergic to milk protein and presented almost exactly.  My Pedi said that 99% of her allergy is presenting internally with the dairy.

Does anyone have a LO with a Banana allergy?  Is it hard to work around?  Is it possible it's just a sensitivity? I am going to call the Pedi in the am with my findings just wanted to know what everyone here has to say.

Thanks for any info.

Re: XP: Allergic to Bananas

  • I actually am allergic to bananas. My reaction isn't too strong, usually just redness where it touches my skin and lots of itching and hives if I eat it.

Though, I did want to mention that if you are allergic to bananas often you will have a latex allergy as well, which I do. So, something to keep an eye out for.

Thanks for the information on the latex allergy.  I will bring that up to the Pedi.

  • DD had a reaction to bananas when we first tried them around 6 months. She got a rash on her face and had diarreah. I stayed away from them for months. At some point she must have grown out of it because she was given a banana again at over a year old and nothing happened. She happily eats them now with no adverse reactions.

She also seems to have grown out of a chocolate allergy. We haven't tried giving her cow's milk again since she was about 15 months old, so I have no idea if she has outgrown her intolerance (we don't drink cow's milk in my house), but she is fine with most cheeses and yogurt.
