3rd Trimester

Glucose Test Q

I tried calling my Dr.'s office a bit ago to ask this but apparently it's their lunch break so I had to leave a message....last time I did that...it took hours to return so I thought I'd ask on here and probably get answers and opinions quicker :-)

Tomorrow is my GTT--1 hour.  From everything I've read, I'm supposed to fast the morning of (my appt is 915) but what about tonight? I'm not sure how late I should be eating anything tonight and/or, are there foods to avoid. I'm sure these are silly questions but I don't want to mess up and have to do the 3hr!

Thanks!!

Re: Glucose Test Q

  • If you do eat anything that morning, make sure its pretty blan (eggs, toast, etc), and just dont eat 1 hour before.... is what my doctor said,

  • It depends on the doctor. I didn't have to fast at all for my 1 hour.

  • All my dr told me was no breakfast... So I think I ate really late at night, then my appt was at 8am.  Thankfully I passed b/c I did not want to do the 3 hour one.  Good luck!

This. You'll have to wait until you hear back.

  • You need to call your Drs office back and ask because all offices have different policies.  A receptionist or nurse should be able to quickly answer your question.  My Dr didn't want me to eat any differently than normal.  I had breakfast then lunch and had the test done from 2-3pm.

  • I didn't have to fast for the one-hour, but I did anyway, which was fortunate since I ended up needing to take the three-hour. They were able to do them both in the same day.

My advice is to avoid starchy foods today. I had a lot of starches (potatoes, white bread) the day before my test, and my nurse said that may have pushed me over the acceptable number on the one-hour. If you eat anything in the morning, I'd suggest eggs or something else high in protein and low in carbs.

ETA: My office tests by finger prick, so I got my results immediately. Probably different for those who have to do a full blood draw.

  • I was told to eat normally the morning before 1 hour.   (both times)

just to not eat a super sugary breakfast.

  • I agree with PP who said that you need to talk to your doctor because they are all different. I was told not to eat anything 2 hours before the test and no sugar on the day of the test at all.

  • I just took mine today.  When I had asked, she told me not to fast.  I did eat about 1 hr. 30 min. before (my test was at 9 am).  I do know with the 3 hour one, you do have to fast.

  • My dr told me to eat normally. I had scrambled eggs and a hard boiled egg to help deal with the sugar rush that was to come.

  • It's unfortunate that you didn't ask your doctor's office.  Answers to this seem wildly different.  I was told not to fast before my 1 hour - not the night before or the morning of.  I ate a McMuffin and a Hash Brown on my way to mine, and passed no problem.
