Flashy toy fail

DD may have convinced the inlaws to not get her toys that light up, sing, make crazy noises, etc. (at least not ones that do all of these things at once)!

During the craziness that is DH's family Christmas on Saturday, she got a few Fisher Price toys that do wacky things. We opened the stacker so everyone could see her play with it (as requested), and she went right for it but then started crying her little eyes out when it chimed, lit up, and started a song as she grabbed one of the stars. It took a while for her to calm down, and DH took that opportunity to take the batteries out. It was a big hit once it didn't scream and flash at her anymore!

Anyways, I think SIL may have gotten the point - I forsee lots of board games, puzzles and arts and crafts supplies in DD's future.

While it's unfortunate that your LO had to meltdown for your family to get it, she sure did have awesome timing!

I'm waiting to see how well my in-laws listened to me about that stuff for DD...  I fear that we're going to have a lot of loud plastic toys on Saturday :(

  • Poor baby!  I dont know why toy makers think all those things are interesting to babies.  Hopefully your family remembers in the future!  My mom keeps telling us we will be proud of what they chose.  I sure hope so!

Jealous! Char always gravitates to these toys but melts down later. So they think she loves them.

I think it may have only been because gifts were after about 3 hours of brunch and being tossed around by her big cousins (6 were there, ranging in age from 4 to 21). Wheeee!

Now if only I could get her to cry at the sight of sparkly pink clothing that says "Princess"...

    YesYesYes

(I'm one of those people who's deliberately avoiding telling anyone once we find out the baby's sex, to avoid this sort of thing...so I can definitely relate.)

  • DS absolutely loves anything that plays music.  As a musician, this makes me happy.  I wish a lot of those toys didn't light up though.  I've never heard of a kid being overstimulated by a toy, maybe just shocked by something.  DS just ignores a toy if he doesn't like it.

DH's favorite gift this Hanukkah was a plain keyboard my BIL got him no lights just sound.  He loves to play with it and listen to the demos.

Oh us too!!  DH told the ILs nothing electronic or flashy because his parents are obsessed with Leap Frog and VTech toys (OMG VTech are the worst, so annoying and ugly) but when they dropped off their presents last weekend MIL says "Oh, and they're all educational" and then laughed Confused  At least my mom took me seriously and consulted with me before buying any toys.

DD also usually likes things that play music - I thing this one was just TOO MUCH when she was already way overstimulated. I actually got a picture of her sitting on the floor with three cousins crowded around, their faces not more than six inches away from hers, lol. It's really sweet, but also kind of terrifying.

My mom has a little book that she's had since my nephew was a wee one 15 years ago that has a keyboard attached and music for some nursery rhymes. He loved it when he was little, and she loves it now. It's held up well! Something like this - https://www.amazon.com/Play-Me-Song-Tormont/dp/2764107625/ref=pd_sim_b_4

Oh my gosh, I was just wondering the other day if they still made books like this!!  My sister and I had a couple we LOVED when we were younger.
