projectile spit up

LO hasn't been burping real well I try to burp him 2-3 times during each feeding he's eating between 2-4oz lately but about 15-20 after he eats sometimes he's had projectile spit up and it seems like he spits up about half of his bottle....any suggestions???

Re: projectile spit up

  • My DD does the same thing sometimes.  I try not to put her on her back until 15-20 minutes after she's eaten... I found this cut down on the spitting up and throwing up.  We'll put her in the boppy or prop her up with a pillow.  GL!

  • This may sound crazy, but maybe you should try not burping him for one feeding and see if that helps. It worked for me and her pedi said it was perfectly ok not to burp her. After she eats, I sit her up for about 15 min and she usually burps on her own and she sometimes spits up a teeny tiny bit, but NOTHING like she would when I would burp her. The pedi said some babies take longer to digest the milk and burping them just sends it all back up before it goes down.

  • My son had this happening for weeks ... not saying your LO may have the same thing, but it started at about 2 weeks and just ended this week at 9 weeks.  The pediatrician kept saying it was severe reflux but after 2 negative ultrasounds we got an upper GI study done and sure enough it came back showing a severe blockage. Turns out he had Pyloric Stenosis the whole time... it just hadnt gotten bad enough to show up on an ultrasound.  Hopefully your LO doesnt have this but when i hear people mention their child going through similar situations i can only give you what i know and have experience.  My son would vomit after burping, after sitting for an hour, and at one point after every feeding.  Good Luck and it never hurts to ask for an Upper GI study.

  • My son had pyloric stenosis too! It's more common in boys. He started at 2 weeks old - I thought it was reflux and changed his formula. Pretty soon it became evident it was not spit-up. It was projectile and it was 15-20 minutes after he ate every time. When I took him to the pedi after a few days of it, he'd lost weight. He had an ultrasound and He was admitted to the hospital that day but we had to wait a day and a half for the problem to progress enough for the surgery. He was operated on at 3 weeks old and was fine after that. It was hard though - he was so small.
