martial arts?

Ryan's pediatrician suggested martial arts classes, predominated for to help build skills for focus and self-control.  I was hoping to find a local tai chi or qigong class for kids, but nada.  I'm limited to kung fu, karate, and jujitsu.  I don't really know much about any of those.  Which would you pick and why?

Re: martial arts?

  • I think the style of the instructor/school is more important than the style of martial arts. I'd probably visit each one and see which one I like best, then decide.

Yep this is what I would do as well.

  • DS did a few different kinds of martial arts for a while. The one I liked best had nothing to do with the style, but the mission of the club and instructors. They had a "focus word of the month", something like discipline, or respect, or honor, etc. Each class they would incorporate that into the workout in some form.

This was a smaller dojo and I liked the teachers and it didn't feel like the money pit that was Ernie Reyes, which we tried first & hated. I would just suggest going to visit a few dojos and speak to the teachers, and possibly have a trial class.

    Good luck!

  • My sister is a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwan Do. It did great for teaching her discipline and respect. She started at about 7.
