2nd Trimester

How many do we need?

This is our first baby and we are really clueless as to how much of everything we will need. So, how many do you need of these items:

Bibs

Bottles

Pacifiers

Blankets/ receiving blankets

Socks

Onesies of each size up to 12 months

Pajama sets

Nightgowns

Crib sheets

Hats

And anything else I'm forgetting, besides the things we just need one of?

Re: How many do we need?

  • Bibs We have a crap ton. We didnt even need to start using them until Annabelle was about 3-4 months old and started to drool bad. She will slobber through at least 2-5 a day. It just depends.

Bottles We have 4 and we have to clean them all every night and prepare for the next day. We had a few when I was EBF, just for when I would start pumping. We dont see much of a need to buy anymore since we'll be starting solids soon.

Pacifiers Its recommended that you replace these every 2-3 months. Annabelle didnt even start to take one until about 2 months old. We have a ton of these too. Some how they are all over the house and we constantly misplace them. I vote you can never have enough.

Blankets/ receiving blankets We have two very thick blankets, two regular fleece blankets and about 10 receiving blankets. I only really used the receiving blankets for diaper changes in public (for the changing stations in bathrooms) and when it was hot outside, but even then we didnt use it too much. The other 4 seem to be enough for us,they are used for winter and when she naps/sleeps.

Socks Annabelle is a hot body, and hates to be too warm. We put thin socks on her, but she's never really favored them. For us, about 2-4 pair is enough.

Onesies of each size up to 12 months We have a ton, and all are put to good use. She sometimes will need to be changed through the day due to a spit up or something. It just depends. I really favor her having different things to wear.

Pajama sets We currently have 4 but need more. Some days she will wear one to my parents. They are comfy and warm! Love them!

Nightgowns Like sleepers? Isnt that the same as PJ sets?

Crib sheets We have 3 crib sheets and two mattress savers. We never really had a reason to change her sheets (besides normal rotation) until recently.

Hats We have 3, but she hates them. She only wears one when we are out.

  •  This is what worked for me.

Bibs- a lot!  If you don't have a drooler, then they will get plenty of use when you start soilds

Bottles-I had 4 4oz bottles and 6 8oz bottles.  I don't recommend going crazy on the little ones because they don't use them for that long.

Pacifiers-Only a pack to start, until you figure out what your baby likes.

Blankets/ receiving blankets- regular blankets- 2-3, recieving blankets- 4-8  I used recieving blankets for everything, so I had a ton.

Socks- Only a few pairs for the nb size.  Lots of the tiny clothes are footed.

Onesies of each size up to 12 months- I would have a minimum of 6 per size.  (that is the low end for me.  I have a TON of onsies and I put them under every outfit unless it is summer)

Pajama sets- I would have about 6 sleepers

Nightgowns- I used these religiously for the first few weeks.  I had 6.  Some people don't like them though.  So, get a small pack and see if you like them first.

Crib sheets- I have tons, but I think 3-4 is a good starting point.

Hats- Just a few in neutral colors.  2-3 maybe.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

    Delaney: Born 10/15/09

    Gavin: Born 4/8/11

    Baby #3: due July 10, 2014

Bibs we had a drooler so we have tons of them, so at least they would match his clothes...Stick out tongue

Bottles I didn't want to wash bottles between feedings, so I had around 12 (I figured better safe than sorry)

Pacifiers haha, one for every corner of the house!

Blankets/ receiving blankets we didn't use these much.  We used Miracle blanket and other swaddling blankets until DS was out of sleep sacks...

Socks we only used the few we really liked.  I hated some of them.

Onesies of each size up to 12 months TONS.  especially when they're really little and pee/poo out of diapers...

    Pajama sets  see onesies...

    Nightgowns ?

Crib sheets we did ok with about 4 sheets/mattress protectors. someone told me she made the bed in layers so if you needed to change the sheets in the middle of the night, the next sheet was ready for you. AWESOME idea.

Hats I'm only getting one or two since this is an April baby and I'll only use them for a little while.  I had quite a few for DS but he was a Sept. baby.

I also liked having three diaper bags.  I kept two little ones, one packed in the car and one packed in the house ready to be exchanged when the one in the car ran out.  I kept a larger one in the car with an additional outfit or two and diapers and wipes in case I ran out.  I hate carrying around a huge diaper bag and running around trying to pack one before we left.

  • Bibs - if your kid is a drooler, you'll need a lot.  DS goes through 3-5 a day when teething

Bottles - don't stock up until you know what he/she likes.  I had 4 of each size

Pacifiers - again, don't stock up until you know what your kid likes.  DS has 2 'active' pacis, one for nap time, one for car rides and we replace them every month or so

Blankets - you really don't need them

Receiving blankets - at least a dozen.  I used some (the cheapies) to cover the changing table on the PNP and some (nice Carters flannel) to swaddle

Socks - DS didn't wear socks.  It's hard to keep on infants and they're a pain to put on

Clothes - we used sleep and plays, had about 6 each of 0-3 and 3-6.  We put him in outfits when he started daycare at 12w and I try to keep about 6 outfits

Sheets - four (along with 3 mattress covers)

Hats - along with socks, they don't mix well with infants

  • I'm not sure if nightgowns and sleepers are the same, I've just heard nightgowns are great because they are open at the bottom and it's easier to change the baby.

  • It kinda depends on how often you do laundry. I do maybe once a week, so this is what I have.

    Bibs  7

    Bottles  4 (but I EBF)

Pacifiers  5. They are life savers, and they get lost. Better too many than not enough!

Blankets/ receiving blankets  7 recieving blankets (give or take) 3 bigger blankets

Socks  10 pairs. Sometimes they get pooped on too.

Onesies of each size up to 12 months  14. Plan for 2 a day because they WILL get dirty

    Pajama sets  14

Nightgowns Isn't that the same thing as pjs?

    Crib sheets  3

    Hats  3

You'll also need about 4-7 towels and wash cloths.

  • Bibs: tons.  If you have a spitty baby, you'll go through 12 a day, easy.

Bottles: I BFed, but once I started pumping and giving bottles, I only needed 2-3.

Pacifiers: We had 3-4 of a couple different kinds. DD never took one though.

Blankets/ receiving blankets: same as bibs. We have about 30.

Socks: don't need them for a newborn.  Keep baby in sleepers all day.

Onesies of each size up to 12 months: lots of little ones (0-3, 3-6. 6-9) once K hit 9 months, she wore regular shirts more than onesies.

Pajama sets: we have about 10 in each size.  She wore them all the time until she was about 4 months. we never got her dressed.

    Nightgowns: ??? didn't use them

    Crib sheets: 3-4

    Hats: 4-5

    Get some swaddlers.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I guess I'll give a slightly different perspective - I'm a "less is more" kinda person.  Plus, I think it's much better to start conservative and then see what baby likes (and what you like) before buying too much.

Bibs: We didn't buy a single one.  We've done just fine with the dozen or so that were given to us.

Bottles: I EBF'd and was a SAHM mom for the first year.  We had four bottles (5 oz each) and never needed more.  It'll be different depending on how you're feeding LO of course.

Pacifiers: Started with one pack (2 pacis) plus the one they gave us at the hospital.

Blankets/ receiving blankets: I loved receiving blankets! Used them for swaddling, changing diapers, burp cloths, etc, etc.  We had about 10 (again, all of which were given to us).  We also had one miracle blanket.  Drew now has two regular blankets - one for home and one for the baby sitter and they just stay in the crib (of course we didn't start that until he was older).

Socks: newborn socks are a pain!  Maybe have 3 or 4 pairs just in case.

Onesies of each size up to 12 months: We started with a dozen or so in both 0-3 and 3-6.

Pajama sets: Huge of fan of sleep n' plays and footy pajamas!  I think we had 5 or 6 in both 0-3 and 3-6.  It's much easier to keep LO in one piece sleepers when they are so little.

    Nightgowns: didn't use them

Crib sheets: 2 - we just rotate back and forth

Hats: Maybe 2.  Other than at the hospital, Drew didn't wear hats until it got cold (he was an August baby).
